Need a small commuting bike...

After more than 12 months of happily riding the GSX1400 purchased from a
contact in this newsgroup (and being convinced to buy one from
interstate), I'm back looking for a second bike :)

Now that I'm working and living in a different location, I've traded a
100km/h highway run to work for peak hour Sydney traffic, and the big
heavy GSX1400 is a pain in the arse in this situation.

My plan is to use the GSX1400 for all the other non-commuting stuff and
get something of a small capacity (250?) and smaller physical size that
is easier to handle in traffic but is still big enough to take a 176cm
tall, solid built person. An upright sitting position is a must.

I'm thinking 250cc or so because it would be cheap to buy, cheap to run
    and cheap to insure.

Only looking at spending about $2500 here, so I think an older bike in
good condition is the most likely option.

If anyone can suggest a good make/model to look for, or knows of
something suitable for sale, I'm all ears.

So that's why you wear that funny helmet!

You need a DR650 you do.

  3. This should do the trick for you; http://www.microbike.it/

Cheap to run, no registration necessary, likely no insurance available.

You want a GPX250, you do!

Actually, a postie bike would probably be ideal if you're spending all
your time within 60km/h zones. And it'll be fine for your height, I'm
    180cm:

I'm still working on the 125cc Chinese engine transplant into my CD90.
I need to have it ready for next year's Wintersun. ;-)

Have a look for a Peugeot Speedflight scooter.

They are 99cc two strokes, so they go OK and costs are less, being under
    100 ccs.

Oh well if GB can do so, then I can too:

I have a 2002 Gilera DNA 180 - purchased new (zero Km still in crate)
in 2005, has done about 500Km in 24months (hence why it's for sale) -
reason for low kms being the girly for whom it was bought is now
mother of my 10month old (do the maths.... :) will happily sit on
100k two up so should cope with pretty much most anything you'll want
to do around Sydney commuting wise.

It's the bastard love child of a scooter and a real motorcyle - so it
has a scooter style engine/swingarm with storage under the tank like
    an across.

Above address is invalid BTW. If interested email
    jlittler (at) strategicrevolutions dottt com

With bleeding obvious spam traps removed of course.

Tim, if you really want the ridiculous look, I could sell you the Z50.

I'd have been very interested in that one, too, but didn't know she was
selling it until after it had disappeared.

Ah, sorry about that. I think it needed work and while it was being
    worked on it got sold.

    Or something.

I have a naked Hyo GT250 which the oldest models of may've fallen into
your price range. Dry weight is 155Kg and I'm 50kg +/-10% and I can
handle it no dramas. Brand new you can get one for 5600onroad IIRC.

Failing that a CBF250 should do you - they're my personal fave of the
loaners I've had. the 2 I've ridden were 81 and 87 models admittedly but
    still nice comfy light bikes.

My 1995 EL250 is officially up for sale as of yesterday. It can handle
anything up to 80km/h no worries, will do 100km/h if required. I am
180cm, 80kg and it'd managed to haul me around for the last two years no
worries. It's quite a comfortable bike.

It's in good condition, just had a full service and tune with receipt.
39,000k's, the last 7,000 of which are mine. In great nick for a 12
year old bike. Chain and sprockets were replaced when I bought it, rear
tyre has about 80% tread and front about 50. 4 months NSW rego left on
it and is located in Canberra.

Given that Spring is coming up and there'll be new riders galore looking
for bikes, I'm asking $3200 for it though.

    Would you like a photo?

You work at Rose Hill/Flemington/Caulfield or some similar place,
    right?

I let that slide last time you said it because you worded it
differently (implying you just didn't like riding it over 80) but if
your EL struggles to reach 100Km/hr then there is something wrong with
it - the same motor in a GPX or ZZR comfortably pulls 160 with me on
it (when I was circa 75Kg).

While the windsock effect definitely pulls down the top speed, an EL
should be able to pull at least 130-140.
