It's only a matter of weeks ago that I did a job standing on a pallet
and lifted 30' above floor level with a forklift truck. It's not the
being up there that's the problem, it's how you look after yourself
    once you're there.
Well yes. I wouldn't do it if I was told I had to by my manager.

    Yes. But the steel core has nothing to do with current-carrying capability;
that only depends on cross-sectional area. Right?

When the filament is coolest and resistance is lowest making the current
highest, all things being equal. Right?

Don't you brits even know about tinyurl.com? It's on the World Wide Web,
    for ****'s sake!

    Ever heard of that?

    Apparently not.

I know you lost Ireland, India, Iraq and God-knows how many other
shit-holes through your ineptitude, arrogance, and obstinance, but posting
a simple URL doesn't have to be as complicated as maintaining a 1967 Norton
    Atlas, does it?

Here, I'll make it as easy as for you as possible:

    tinyurl.com

Instead of getting 200+ links, as you've tried to post for me, you'll get
just one. And any simple Brit can click on it and go there.

Jesus Fucking Christ on a cast-iron crutch! When WILL you stupid Limey
bastards join the 20th Century, much less the 21st?

    All my best,

  6. Actually, old chap, we didn't 'lose' them: we gave them away. We
dismantled the empire in a generally enlightened manner. The only
countries we ever 'lost' were America and Rhodesia.

    Are you ignorant about *everything*?

Oh, and that'll be "obstinacy", by the way.

Of course! Of course, m'Lord! Deuced silly of me to say otherwise! What
    could I have been thinking?
Damn. The wogs seem a bit disenchanted, old man. Was that gunfire I heard
in the front court? Pour me another spot of tea, if you'd be so kind.
Damned Rhodesians! No sense of fair play!

By the by, could you explain that bit about Palestine and Israel? Seems
that there might be a bit of disagreement about it when you left back in
    '48.

And weren't you Brits somewhat involved in Iraq about that time? And Hong
    Kong later?

Loved the way you dealt with the Argentines a few years ago, though!
Nuclear subs versus WWII-era cruisers! Britannia rules oe'r the ocean!

Except where the US does, of course.

So, whatever happened to British sea-power? And how is it that this
colonist's Navy now rules the seas?

And what does the British Navy rule these days? The Firth of Forth?

Or is that just another US Navy base that we let the British use?

    Pray, enlighten me, your Lordship.

    doc

This has to be irony. And coming from a Brit, yet!

On your little island--the remnants and tatters of a once great
    empire--shouldn't that be "obstinansy?" M'Lord?

And, besides, who are you to judge? Your kind hasn't done anything right in
over 70 years. Even your Ken thinks you're full of. . .

    .. . . well, that's between you and Ken, isn't it?

The thing is, Grimly was posting for a British audience who, if
they want to look at a URL, are intelligent enough to paste the
lines of a wrapped link into their browser's address bar.

It's an elegant way to keep a thread going without the ignorant
    and uninformed joining in.

    Present company excepted, of course.

You silly silly man. Britain started the creation of Israel for the Jews
while the USA was still barring them from employment and government
    positions.

Almost credible if it weren't for the fact that any English-speaking,
freedom-loving country in the 21st century happens to have access to this
newsgroup. Not that the UK qualifies, but let's assume it does.

Why should anyone inviting a guest give the most devious, circuitous,
hardest, muddiest, most obscure, and damndest route possible when it's
easily within their provenance to to do better?

    Ah! Because he's English!

And just because the English have enjoyed the reputation of being the most
obstinate bastards in the world for the last 400 years or so, and have
nevertheless ascended the heights of glory and descended into the valleys
of despair and presently live in a third-world hell-hole comparable to the
worst slums of the darkest ghettos of its former Indian or African
subjugates, does that mean that that the ignorant, besotted, and syphilited
dickheads can't use the technology available to them? Or are the British,
of all the web-connected peoples of the world, immune to modern technology?

In other words, they're either deliberately ignorant, or they're stupid.

The latter would explain a lot, but the former isn't a whole lot better.

Thanks for the <plonk> but you haven't the foggiest when it comes to
    Britain, Palestine, or the Jews.

Do learn some history, you silly goose; your government did all it could to
discourage Jewish emigration to the British Protectorate during the
    Holocaust.

Not that Britain was alone, mind you, but Britain had the authority and
abdicated it as soon as it could.

Freedom of speech was never valued in Great Britain, but Naziism was. What
was your Prime Minister said? Peace in our time?

    Fool.

  12. Well, steel is also a conductor, so at least some current is gonna go down
the steel bit. In fact, I'd expect the steel to carry current proportional
to the relative impedance of aluminium and steel, for the relevant
electrical conditions, says he fudging 'cos he's forgotten on what impedance
    depends...

but CSA of conductor is certainly a factor.

  15. **** tiny url. If you were using a decent newsreader you'd have seen it
on one line. You'll notice the url: at the beginning - that's what it's
    for.

Anyway; you seem to have gone off on an unrelated topic.

I'd be hesitant to say we even lost Rhodesia. They may have declared
UDI but they kept their British passports so it was only a token
    gesture.

Correct, when I was working for a company using vacuum furnaces
the voltage had to be applied gradually to avoid current surges.
