So I took it to get an MOT today. It's been sitting for a few months on the
Optimate. It was a pig to start, and I hope this isn't a symptom of the carbs
getting gummed up - I thought that took a couple of years but now I'm
paranoid. Even when it started it wanted to stall when I revved it, it was
gutless at low revs. Seemed okay after a couple of miles though.

Before I "stored" it, as prevention, should I have let it run with the fuel
tap set to off to drain the carbs? And at this point, is there any additive
worth adding to the fuel tank that might actually clean things up, or are they
    all snake oil?

    No, that'll never work.

Funnily you can buy "carb cleaner", I used it on my old 400 and it
worked great. I think Silkolene do it.

  5. Tip in a half litre of methanol. It might improve things, especially if
there's any condensation in the tank, but it doesn't harm anything.

have you checked the air intake is not full of spiders etc?

Otherwise, just fill it up with fresh petrol and ride it. Allegedly, some
petrol has detergents in it that should help to clean things up, so treat
    it to a posh brand.

Always a good idea to run the carbs dry if the bike is not going to be
used for more than a week. Absolutely essential for 2strokes.

Turn the fuel on and leave it overnight then give it a good shake.
Anything that was in the fuel must be soluable in fuel, anything else is
likely to need a carb strip and clean anyway.
