  1. As it generally takes me something like six months for one single
component on one bike, I'd imagine that it'll take the NMM some time
    into the next millennium.

Why? They left the factory like that anyway.

I think it was on Wed, 17 Sep 2003 09:04:23 -0500 that BuZzY

S'cuse me, but the fire was started by a tab igniting a pile of
cardboard boxes left in a designated smoking area. OK so some poor
smoker is now full of guilt 'cos he didn't put his fag (UK meaning,
redneck) out properly, but who is the real dickhead here? Who would
even contemplate storing waste combustable material in a smoking area?

Very sad pix on Midlands TV of burned out Trumps and Royal Enfields.

  6. personally, I agree - it's a better use than a lot of what they waste it on.
As to whether in an ideal world it *should*, then maybe not.

but the world is a nicer place with publicly-accessible museums collections
and suchlike in it, and they're not easy to run on a self-funding basis.

  7. my comments about the typical attitude of some smokers lobbing their
fag-ends wherever, uncaring about what it hits or whether it sets fire to
    something, are still valid though.

When I was in Uni, a few years back, they re-vamped one of the bars which I
used to clean in the mornings to earn extra pennies. nice new tables,
    carpets, new seats, the lot.

within a week, there were numerous burns in the carpet due to people
dropping lighted fag-ends - this despite the fact that every table had an
    ash-tray.

they're on a par with dog owners who let their pooch crap in a public place
and CBA to clean up after it, and with even less likelihood of a remotely
    acceptable excuse.

though I grant what you say, if the place where the boxes etc. was indeed a
designated smoking area, then it was the wrong place for them to be stored.

Don't be so daft. If some stupid smoker decides to smoke where they did, it
wouldn't matter if there was a smoking room provided or not. Damm smokers.

Smokers use an ashtray - huh?

Why do so many throw their cigarettes out the windows of their cars - when
the bloody things are still burning AND THEY HAVE AN ASHTRAY RIGHT NEXT TO
THEM?. Smokers are dumb shits a lot of the time - who else is seen to be
doing nothing wrong by throwing their rubbish on the floor and stepping on
it? Would you mind me throwing half a Big Mac on the floor as long as I trod
    on it first.

Kings cross ring a bell with you? I was driving a Piccadily line train that
day and entered Kings Cross platform full of smoke - I damm near shit myself
    I can tell you.

Bloody drug takers ought to do it at home

More years ago than I want to think about I was riding my maggot and got
SMIDSYied. I and the bike flew , I was knocked out and woke up find
myself covered in fuel , under the bike, with about 6 council workers in
a ring looking down on me, all dragging on their fags all saying " 'E
don't look well do 'e?" Then the ambulance arrived with a shout of "Oi!
Put those bloody fags out!" To a man they all turned, looked at the
ambulance driver ( in blue serge then), turned back, took one, huge,
last gasping drag, making the ends glow like hot rivets, then in a
synchonised action threw threm onto the fuel flooded ground.

It was then that I realised two things.

    1) How removed smokers are from the world around them when it comes to
    their habit and it's effects.
    2) I had just pissed myself with fear.

If I recall correctly, the Kings Cross fire was due to an accumulation
of rubbish under an escalator, and nothing to do with smoking.

Well, now would be a good time to set up shop as a classic motorcycle
restorer in Birmingham. The old boy's going to have a lot of insurance dosh
    to throw away.

Whilst it was blamed on a lit match there was also the question of an
overheating bearing igniting the accumulated rubbish, but that suddenly went
    quite.

Since smoking had been permitted on the Underground since the first line
opened in 1863 with the first escalator in (IIRC) 1911 with never a hint of
    fire problems what suddenly changed?

Yup, management decision to cut back on cleaning and manintenance. If the
crap hadn't been there it couldn't have caught fire. Nothing to do with
smoking, everything to do with managerial competence, cost cutting etc.

So do I. Despite being quite a heavy smoker I hate the smell of
stale smoke and only smoke in one room in the house with the window
open and a fan on. I also try not to smoke in public unless there

window when driving - well when I did my 3 years 'tour of duty' as a
London courier bike rider I had enough of them land on me (including
one going inside the visor of my helmet) to have learned not to do
    this:-(

:) It doesn't matter much here - it just mingles with the smoke
from the gangs of 10-year olds who sit on the wall below (and often
it isn't straight 'cigarette smoke' that wafts up!).

  20. all fair comments, but that doesn't mean that quite a lot of smokers are
    thoughtless arseholes.
