Try Googling HTU biocrude - it looks promising.

Essentially, it's biodiesel from bio *waste*, so no need for specific
crops at all. Not only that but you get feedstock for chemical
industries, too. I think I read somewhere that the initial conversion
is about 80% energy efficient, but ICBW.

The resultant crude does need de-oxygenation, which required lots of
hydrogen, which is a negative point, but it's still considered one of
    the most promising solutions.

I've seen photos of capiliaries with slivers of wood in them at
various stages of conversion to biocrude. Takes about six minutes of
    pressure and heat.

Heh. we had that near I work - a huge windfarm was denied planning
permission. Personally I think they look rather elegant, but aparently
there are noise issues with beat effects.

I was once very pro windfarm, though that enthusiasm has cooled
slightly. They're OK for topping-up energy, but we would always need a
full-capacity alternative for when there is no wind.
See my other post on HTU biocrude.

With FI it would be *so* easy to do, too.

A company car I once drove had a fuel consumption meter, though
someone told me it really just measured intake vacuum, which
    apparently gives a rough guide.

Also, the carbon output from Transport (Not sure what this constitutes
though) is only the third largest of four classes of user in the UK:
Domestic energy consumption is the greatest by far. This according to
    an Environment Agency website.

The reason transport is being aimed at (and the Greens say as much in
the article) is because it's an easy target.
We still need to grow food, y'know.

My car typically does between 27mpg & 30mpg (worst ever 23, best ever
33 that I've measured) and I generally drive at <70 for the same
    reason.

  6. Most bikes only produce crap fuel figures because we all take advantage
of the p/w ratio. Generally, if bikes are driven at the same rates of
acceleration and speeds as cars they can produce surprising economy,
being fairly sorted in gasflow. But it's boring as ****, so **** it.

ITYF that's what the old ones did (by old I'm thinking about '82 BMW)
    New ones, AFAIK calculate it.

  8. Eeh, that takes me right back. Used to be all the rage to have a vacuum
gauge in the dash of one's 850 mini or whatever.

Yeah, it would be piss easy with FI 'cos it *knows* exactly what it's
    injecting!

The car in question was ( I think) a Fiat Regatta and I'm pretty sure
it was before FI was widespread.

So, my response to an unthought through posting by someone else has got
your back up becasue you think it was aimed at you ?

    Get real

As you travle by train and it was a car issue, I can;t see what you are on
about. You are using the correct form of transpoirt and are lucky enough
to have a train line that you can use.

  15. Over the years I've been more aware of just how much we depend on oil to
do all sorts of stuff, but when I started to ponder on how various
industries would manage in a reduced oil economy I realised that most of
them probably wouldn't do it at all. Oil is such an integral part of our
manufacturing, distribution and domestic environments that we simply
take it for granted and don't think much about it.

If we don't pull our fingers out now and start making some plans and
preparation for the decline of our oil-dependent civilisation, we're all
    going to be pretty fucked.

A few weeks ago I heard of the UK Gov's plans for 2020 and how they'd
like to avoid being in the situation of importing 95% of their energy by
then. A pundit in Dublin pointed out that Ireland is already doing that
and has been for a while - hence the Irish Govt's keen-ness on building
more wind farms, tidal barrages, etc. There's always the NIMBYs to keep
    us amused, of course.

  16. There's a couple of pilot plants operating in Yoosa. One next to a
massive turkey farm receives all the turkey waste - shit, feathers,
carcasses and turns out lovely oil you can bung in your car. They've
been going a couple of years now and larger plants are being built on
    the success of those.

  19. I used to do that with a manifold vacuum gauge - quite interesting to
see how much you could back off the throttle and still maintain the same
    forward speed.
