    National Motorcycle Awareness Ride

Thousands of motorcyclists will ride to Canberra on Saturday, January 28
in support of a celebrity based motorcycle awareness ride to highlight a
range of important motorcycle awareness and safety issues.

Following in the footsteps of the famous Celebration Rides in 1996 and
2001, this national awareness ride will bring together a cross section
of the whole motorcycle community in Australia in order to bring
positive public attention to the importance of motorcycling and making
    drivers 'more aware'.

Organised this time by Bikers Australia and the Melbourne based MRAA,
the details will be similar to previous rides with a road closure on the
Federal Highway and a mass ride through the cheering throng of local
residents to New Parliament House. It is expected that members of the
Federal Government will be present and already has the support of
Federal MP Jackie Kelly (see attached letter).

Previous Awareness rides to the nation's capital have secured an
enormous amount of positive motorcycle coverage in the mainstream media
across Australia. Indeed the last Celebration ride featured prominently
on news bulletins and significantly featured on the front page of the
Canberra Times, as well as other papers and national motorcycle
magazines. More information will be available at
    ww.bikersaustralia.com.au soon.

As with the Celebration Rides, this National Motorcycle Awareness Ride
is expected to attract a lot of positive public attention to motorcycle
safety and awareness issues as well as to motorcycling itself. Get your
friends to come and make this the biggest ever.

    Yours in motorcycling,

    Greg Hirst

    Organising Committee Chairman.

Yeah, but celebrities only exist if there are common folk about who can
recognise them and show appropriate adulation.

Yes, in fact I find it a bit offensive when they invite celebrities on
these kinds of rides and the media portray the celebrities as somehow
being the centre of things or playing a bigger than what they do.
Recent example being the news reports on the Melbourne Pink Ribbon Ride
where invited guest Tara Moss led the ride, draw the raffle and featured
in about 50% of the 60ish seconds of news report.

The message gets a bit lost doesn't it.

Tabloid TV headline - "Tara Moss went for a ride"

Errrm few (none?) of the DOBs would outclass Ms Moss* in the "glam for
    the TV" stakes.

Yes, when we found out after the ride that she had been leading it, it
explained why most of the ride through the hills had been first gear, on
the brakes, coming to a complete halt quite often... most of the bikes
were running hotter than they would leaving the Phillip island circuit
carpark after the GP. Didn't bother me so much... was on a borrowed
Gixxer 600 so it wasn't my bike overheating.

Without her there, there's a pretty good chance that it
wouldn't have made the telly at all.

  19. Almost had me!

But given I'd much rather thread rusty razor blades through my scrotum
than have anything to do with anything Jackie's even mildly associated with,
I'll give this one a miss.

Shame really, seems like it could've been a good enough cause, before
the pollies redirected it for their own benefit.

How much of the ride did she do?

Last year, on the Great Vic Bike Ride, she participated in that. Only
time that anyone saw her on a bike when it was unloaded out the back of
a van for a photo op.

Still, she seemed a rather approachable woman. Wonder what her books are
    like..
