national bike sales

  1. THis came through the MCC delegates list.

The Vic numbers are the only ones going down.... Bad weather? Speed
cameras? You'd think that with free tollways they'd be more popular.

(I don't know if this includes posties and ag bikes or not)

I don't know. They've been published in AMCN and such, maybe someone
    with back issues can check.

Bike figures aren't in a decline this year...

Doubt the "freeways" would have much to do with it. Most seem to ride
    where it's fun.
Posties generaly don't factor in the national asales, according to
previous reports that I've read in AMCN and Two Wheels.

Do you have any figures over the past 5 or 10 years? An article in
yesterday's Fin Review called for the banning of bikes through a
prohibitive tax regime. It stated amongst other things, that bike sales
were on the decline, yet casualty crashes (including death and injury)
    were up.

It's on the mcnews.com.au website somewhere. And it's getting a good
    airing on the Netrider forums.

I bought 2 new bikes in 2002 and only 1 new bike in 2003 :)

NT figures were down too.. and ACT was only up by 1%. Is it considerably
cheaper to buy or register a bike in the ACT compared to the surrounding
regional NSW areas? Seems like a disproportionate number of bike sales
there. ACT population is lower than Tas, weather is possibly worse for riding
than Tas, roads are (apparently) nowhere near as good as those in Tas, but
there are 4 bikes sold in ACT for every 1 sold in Tas...

Rego is cheaper than NSW or Vic for sure, I don't know about Tassie.

There's also a lot more money per capita around here than in Tassie,
and you know what bankers & public servants with too much money are
    like...

Maybe the additional helmet costs discourage Taswegians....

It depends a bit on whether scooters are counted as bikes .
VIC is the only State that applies the same rego rates to bikes as
well as scooters, all the other States have drastically cheaper rates.
Also some States like QLD, SA and WA allow scooters up to 50cc to be
ridden on a normal car license , ie no bike license needed.
There has been a major increase over the last 12 months in the number
of scooters being registed in Aus , mainly due to the hi price of
petrol, but also due to the rising performance of scooters.

Ive been riding big bikes for 35 years and I recently traded down to a
scooter, and I was very impressed on just how fast a little 125 cc
    bike can go.
Even better is the cost of filling the tank, just $6.

I think you better line up for some random drug testing. Registration rate
are the same for all bikes regardless of capacity $32, but the total cost of
registration (i.e. compulsory third party premiums) vary wildly. In a high
risk zone (suburban Melbourne) TAC charges vary ... 1cc-60cc = $62.
    61cc-125cc = $246 . 126cc-500cc = $325. 501cc and over = $445.
