    Almost all people generalize birds.

No such thing as a "sea gull." That one covers about 100+ species.

No such thing as a Buzzard. I think folks mean "turkey vulture" when
    they use that term.

"Hawk" seems to work for about 50+ species of hawks, falcons,
    gyr=falcons, buteos, etc.

In otherwords, yeah, it's a jay and it's blue, but that's about as far
as the general description goes. Kinda like saying, "I saw a blue
motorcycle" to a biker...kinda generalizes but doesn't tell you much
    else.

    Oh look, there's a Xantu's Murrilet !

First you say there aren't any, then you say there are 100 different
kinds. If you're going to be pedantic, be consistent. If a layman
looks at a critter and says, "Look! A sea gull!", sure, you could
clarify the fact that it's actually a Heermann's Gull, but he isn't
    wrong.

You are correct: I should be specific. "Sea gull" is *intended* to
cover 100+ species by folks who don't know birds and all birds into a
    few categories."

And yes, he is "wrong." Because, again, there's no such thing as a "sea
gull"--if he said, "gull" that would just be a generalization and not
wrong. The "sea" part is the add-on that means nothing.

btw, sometimes this works in reverse! The official name for the
"pigeon" has always been "rock dove." But the ornithologist's union
(the naming body) changed it to "rock pigeon" recently...prolly due to
colloquial usage. So now if you called it a dove you'd be wrong and if
you called it pigeon you'd be right even though you used to be wrong!

I figured you'd latch on to that bit, so I looked in my Robbins, and
sure enough, some gulls actually _aren't_ sea gulls but inland gulls
(Franklin's, among others,) so I'll see your quibble and raise you.
