There's no smoke and it idles beautifully (if noisily...) - I'll check
    compression later.

I thought they would 'whine' rather than knock.

New block was perfect. The oil cooler conversion sump was a homebrew which
had a few machined parts inside the sump pan. Fine on the original lump but
fouled on the new block for some reason.
None at all. The crank in the new block did all of the necessary 'machining'
    for me!

The flywheel was swapped and I suspect it may be catching something -
there's some tinware behind the flywheel.

Chap I bought it off knows his Jag stuff and drove the car it was taken
from shortly before the engine came out. He was quite shocked when I
    told him.
Fucking large amount - dynamo/power steering pump, both manifolds,
radiator, exhausts and carbs, throttle linkage, third carb plumbing,
vacuum system, rev counter generator, crankshaft damper (front crank
pulley), water pump, fan belt idler wheel, clutch, flywheel, engine back
plate, oil filter head, gearbox, gearbox remote, gearbox tunnel, clutch
    slave.

The gearbox and engine come out as one unit and they're enormous.

The local under the arches type who used to specialise on the big Rovers
and Jags is putting it up on his ramps when he gets a spare hour and
    checking it with his stethoscope.

Interestingly, he said it wasn't bearings and thinks it's something in
    the sump or bell housing.

Bearings will at some point in the rev/load range change their noise and
even go silent. This stays totally constant with engine speed/load.

Local under the arches chap (who used to do Rovers and Jags) reckons it's
not bearings - I drove it round for him to listen to earlier today.

UJ stupidity aside - I did say "the knocking is constant with engine
speed and not related to load" which pretty much rules out exhausts
    knocking on the body.

If you watched the video you'd see that.

It's a manual and the engine was also from a manual.

It would close the gap and stop running - it idles beautifully (but
    noisily)

I checked the oil - it's correct on the dipstick.

    No fan.

    Maybe.

    The crankcase pressure is fine.

    Ok.

You were thinking of those ancient vibrators powered by Spagthorpe
    twins, right?

"Blackie" Blackington was my old auto shop instructor. (He worked on
Model A's when they were new.) He always carried a doctor's
stethoscope around in his shop coat. Said it was invaluable in proving
idiots wrong about curious noises emanating from engines.

No, the Spagthorpe meme should've been put to rest many years ago.

Well, they sure as hell weren't powered by Rolls, ya fuddyduddies.
BTW, you may want to inform Beav, WUN, Auvache and the Grimly Coot.
They've all resurrected the brand in the last few months. Like any
well-designed piece of machinery, it just refuses to die.

I'm not picking on you. I'm using you as a reference. (Or as a shield,
    if the going gets rough.)

    Oh bugger. Indeed he does:)

Well apart from me having no idea where Weston-Super-Mere is :)

Well we'll both be corrected soon enough, I'm sure. But anyway, it was just
    a guess.
