Yup, same as anything with a transaxle - other than Alfa, the most common
here are probably Porsche 924/944/968 and Volvo 340/360.

I'm quite liking the idea of a 3.8 Jag XK lump in a Volvo 340, I have to
    admit.

You don't mean anything with a transaxle has the clutch at the back, do
    you?
    Weirdo.

AFAIK, most do. Except, obviously, the automatics. Which would tend to
have the torque converter at the back.
    Did I ever deny it?

Indeed. 50/50 weight distribution. Gear shift, not so good.

Oh. Well the 944 certainly doesn't, & I doubt the 924/968 do either.

    Typical VW. Half-arsed as ever.

'course, it still means the propshaft's going to be spinning merrily with
the car stationary. Unless the clutch is pressed.

Personally I think it's better that way - keeps the height & length of
the transaxle down which makes for a lower floor & bigger boot/more
    rear headroom.
Sure. But that's better too when it comes to diagnosing rumbles/vibes
as you can take the propshaft out of the equation.

I have no personal bias either way, having owned two RWD Alfas & a 951.
I just think the Porsche way makes more sense.

It sounds a lot like an air leak somewhere. either in or out, hard to tell.

Heh:) Maybe they have rotating propshafts on cars that aren't moving in
    Septic land.

In the meantime, what's Septic land got to do with it?

    Long-reach plug in a short-reach head?

Over-filled sump so crank slapping oil?

    Fan blade loose?

    Loose nut holding steering wheel?

Funnily enough that was my thought too. But I discounted it because I
assumed someone who knows will come along and correct me!

I had something similar - turned it it was an exhaust gasket

I had a nasty 'tapping' noise on a Talbot Express van that turned out to
be a blowing exhaust manifold gasket. That tended to be worst at idle
and be less noticeable under load though.

My Polo once started sounding like a tractor and it was just that a
spark plug had come somewhat unscrewed.

You know how you spacebar your way through posts, reading the message
bodies but not the subjects? Well the first two of those /kinda/ made
sense as a follow-up to Thomas talking about a double-dildo scene, but
the third fair made me boggle.

That's what it sounds like to me, too. It has neither the rattle of a
top end nor the deep thumpy knock of a bottom end, to me (bearing
(hah!) in mind the limitations of the recording medium, of course.
