    Or awful knocking sound...

    Further to Poorly Jag Saga:

After my 1965 3.8s lunched its engine (piston ring broke) I fitted a
    known good 3.8 from a 1959/60 Mk2.

Unfortunately it knocks. However the knocking is constant with engine
speed and not related to load. It doesn't sound like bearings and is
coming from the rear low down - I filmed it with a hot engine.

Still camera on movie setting footage, unfortunately.

Does pushing the clutch in have any effect on the sound?

    It's 50 years old.

A year in the remedial counting class.

That would be my next test. Then trying to use an engine bodger's
stethoscope (long screwdriver with lughole pushed against plastic
handle) on suspect areas in an attempt to localise it even more.
    Difficult on a car, though.

    I know. I'm still living in 2000.
it'll not take me a year to count up to 10.

It does to me. In fact it sounds like a big-end bearing that is severely
worn, but hasn't picked up on the shaft yet.

There's no chance it couldn't be anything daft like one of the SU carb
pistons boucing up & down (failed damper maybe)?

Any reason you've not posted to uk.rec.cars.maintenance or
    uk.rec.cars.classic?

Silly question, but is it a rotating part like the crank hitting a bolt or
another object which you retained/reused from the old engine? I had a
similar experience with my old RR V8. used the old sump (which had an oil
cooler take off conversion) on a recon block, and found the conrod hit a
    small part of the casting.

Exhaust knocking on the body or a stuffed UJ.
Jack up the rear onto stands, run it in gear and check that the propshaft
    is running true.

Yea right, I had not read the post about putting the clutch in.
Could still be the exhaust as he said the sound is from the back.
Happened to me once causing much headscratching until someone
    suggested it.

Why should the propshaft be turning on a stationary car?

Yes I had a similar sound on a SOBB once - too long a bolt just catching
    on a crankshaft web.

Does sound nasty - was it definitely a known good engine, or just on
    someone's say so?

How much dissassembly/reassembly of the engine was needed to get it in?

It sort of depends on your definition of 'propshaft' but the drive shaft
that ran the length of the car spins at engine revs all the time[1]
I bow to your greater knowledge

[1]At least AFAICR. Bloody sure I'm right though, cos the clutch is at
    the back as well.
