Name that tune - Voxan not Jag this time.

So I decided to fill the Voxan with Castrol RS10-60 (it was the price
that put me off 'wasting' it) and start it up.

I don't think it's a good idea to put under load given its delicate
state, but I had to let it tick over anyway to make sure oil had reached
all the parts. The oil pressure warning light was extinguished easily
just by cranking it round with the kill switch to off (yes, yes, some
bikes allow that and it is vital for the Voxan oil change routine).

During the subsequent warming up to do a final check after putting all
the oil in I took a bit of scratchy MPEG on my camera. The noise is much
worse when properly hot but you should be able to hear the rumble when
the clutch is home abate when released. It isn't as horribly clattery
when idling as I remembered, but the flakes in the sump strainer tell
    the story apparently.

I'll see what Patrick in Limoges says.

Sounds very much like a dryish main bearing, or even a bit of piston slap.
Hard to tell on lo-fi like that, whatever, it's gonna cost Pete :(

Dry, as in broken up, main bearing shells is the experts diagnosis so
    far.

Think I'm probably going to just cut my losses and get something more
mainstream. A pity, because I really like it otherwise.

I doubt it's fully broken up, or it would be knocking worse than that i
would have thought & if it has, game over.

Does it do the knock on the thrust or the return? Or both..

If you have copper or white metal in the sump or strainer...

Put some very thick oil in it & sell it :) (kidding)

The story is that one batch of 100 early motors were built with shells
from a shite (probably very cheap) supplier. They apparently 'flake',
but not until > 10000 Kms if ridden as intended, though some pussies
have got away with it for longer apparently. If I had done more miles on
it when I first had it they would have had to do it under the warranty.
Knocks most when the clutch is home.
It did, I posted a link to a photo.

True, it really needs a 'before' version.

  9. Well, it's noisy compared wih a Jap engine, sure, but anyone who'd never
heard (for example) a Ducati lump before wouldn, on first hearing (say)
a 900SS, would assume it was about to explode.

    <Thinks>

    OK, as you were.

    In communiqué <1jq6tm0.zvitjkfqo55gN%>,
It becomes more unpleasant when riding at around 4000 rpm under light
load. Still, I'm glad to hear my mechanical sympathy hasn't totally
    deserted me.

Perhaps I've caught it early enough for it not to have damaged the crank
journals. Still think the cards are on me coming back from France
    without it.

[Aside for UKRM ears only: Lac Vassiviere is pretty deep in parts]
