Nacogdoches, Texas, is the oldest town in the State, atleast they claim
    that.

    Natchitoches, (pronounced, Na-ca-tish)
is the oldest town in Lousiana.

The old Indian fable goes like this:

The Chief consults his twin sons, who are now of the age to leave the
TeePee, by telling them to each go in different ways, the following
    early morning hours.

He tells the blonde headed son to travel east, and at sundown, stop, and
start your own family, build your own TeePee.
--He tells the dark headed one, to travel west, young man, and do the
    same thing.

The blonde son, whom traveled directly east, named his village area,
Natchitoches, of which a few hundred years later, became lousiana

The dark headed son, stopped west, at the Nacogdoches area, and so in
    so.

I read this in the Texas Travel Magazine a while back, and we drove our
Van, first to Nacogdoches, and looked around then drove east on the
    rural roads, to Na-ka-tish, La.

    Both Towns have Universities,
Both claim to be the oldest in their areas.
Nacogdoches is the much larger of the two. <.bjay<>

I must correct myself. It seems Galveston is the oldest *port* in Texas.

Encyclopedia Britanica says "Regarded as the oldest settlement within the
    present boundaries of Texas,
Ysleta was founded in 1681-82 by Spanish padres and Christian Indians" but
that it was on the south side of the Rio Grande and wasn't part of Texas
back then. Seems that the river shifted it's banks, became part of Texas,
and eventually was swallowed up by El Paso.
