  1. The empty boxes of Just For Men are a giveaway, too.

  5. Speaking of which:

Oi! Simon! Get your chaps in shape! There's absolutely *NO* excuse for
the /packed/ 1730 from Bristol to Paddington being cancelled tonight
_because the driver didn't show up_! You can imagine how crowded the 1800
was -- they even made an unscheduled stop at Didcot Parkway because of the
overflow from the earlier train (I guess they were going to transfer at
either Swindon or Reading -- quite a few got off at DP).

I actually managed to be first on board the 1800 when it arrived
from W-s-M (people tend to defer to someone with a large grey beard) and
secured a beach-head on a 4-seat table; unfortunately my Imperial College
colleagues weren't following closely in my footsteps, and turned the wrong
way, so I only held the fort for 90 seconds at best. :-(

    Pah. That's nothing.

First two weeks of the new timetable, every time I tried to get the
18.36 home from Paddington, it was cancelled due to lack of an available
driver. My commute in was extended by a full hour this morning because
the 7.50 was cancelled leaving no fast trains. Bearing in mind that the
7.50 is usually standing room only, if you can get on at all, all
remaining trains made the average sardine can look like the sweeping
    plains of the serengeti.

FGW & DfT in "utterly fucking shit" shocker. More news at 11, assuming
that hasn't been cancelled as well.

  7. This is but a mere trifle compared to the lunacy that is masquerading as
a train service over the entire First Great Western franchise area.
This is what happens when civil servants specify the train service and a
skinflint bus company is asked to run it.
