Can't you fake it up a bit? The Beeb does it all the time.

I check my digital watch, which I consider to be pretty neat, then move a
torch to the appropriate position and take the time from the cast shadow.
Also has the benefit of working at night.

    The Armillary Sundial in Basildon?

    Nah.

Hard work that site, a bit to nerdy for my tastes, although it did lead
    me to matey in Maldon.

Well, I was thinking about non-mechanical timing devices, standing
stones etc. as they could be considered sun dials as such (as no one
actually knows what they were erected for), but it sounds like that sort
    of thing isn't really viable

I thought you were going to come up with something on the lines of some
architect that had this building that cast shadows on different paving
    stones or similar.

Not viable eh? That sounds like a challenge.

I wonder if there is anybody on ukrm who would care to lend me a
helicopter and pilot for the weekend?

TBH, I'm trying to work out what the image is being used for. I'm
assuming that it's fairly obvious and indicates the passing of time and
the inevitable conclusion of having terminal cancer..?

I can think of a number of ways of showing the passing of time - from
ultra-cheesy to fairly abstract - but I'm not sure any would be suitable
as the ones I like pretty much revolve around the weathering or decaying
of some object etc. which I would've thought would not be welcomed under
the circumstances as the symbolism of inevitable decay leading to death
would be viewed as being somewhat thoughtless and even offensive

I don't know actually. It is a touchy subject and all that but she
doesn't do the deep melancholy bit, at least not in public. In fact,
far from resigned to her somewhat inevitable lot she seems determined to
battle on to the bitter end and make the very best of what she has got
while she has still got it.

I haven't seen any edited stuff but she seems to be basing it on a
reading of a passage from The Secret Garden using the images to
reinforce the spoken text. I don't know the book but I suspect that the
passage she is using comes from near the beginning, possibly the opening
chapter, during a time of revelation and joyous discovery.

I suspect that she if she is deliberately trying for anything which
could be considered as a message it would be the joys of spring and
rebirth and hope for the future and stuff. All happy and fluffy.
To be honest I don't think she would even notice. Visual impairment
aside her life was put on hold when she was 16 and her emotional and
social development has been equally stalled. She doesn't have the
experience of life enough to appreciate Mahler

However, this being ukrm thoughtless and offensive does somehow seem
    appropriate.

What about showing the shadows cast by a rose bush and using that as a
metaphor for time? (**** I did'nt know I could do arty farty!!) (hmmmm
    clearly I still can't!!)
