  2. I reckon Tinyurls are invaluable for the huge long
amazon/mutlimap/ebay etc type URLs which contains bits of the queries
used to locate the specific item you wish to link to, and end up
wrapping onto 2 or 3 lines.

But the original link wasn't that long anyway, and as you suggest,
    would have been 'informative'.

Make a rule Darsy!! And killfile 'em if they can't stick to it:
meaningful, directory-based URLs stay whole, less meaningful ones
(your amazon 2-liners, for example) get tiny'd.

  3. All bread is butties if you're from Staffordshire. HTH. Even if you
refer to it as toast at home, you have to refer to it as butties when
you're out, to demonstrate your northern-ness. Even though as we all
know, Staffordshire is as posh as you can get for the north.

But it is '-ies' not '-ys', Mups ;o)

  7. I genuinely didn't know. It's one of those words I've heard millions of
times, and just never bothered asking what it means. It means concise,
doesn't it? What does concise mean?

    28 hours and counting.

oh, I thought you were trying to be clever.
Concise means short and to the point. Succinct means short and to the
point and conveying a good impression of the longer form.

I've written half of my own tinyurl system (url.pre.org) with a plan
to letting a user choose the abbreviated URI so they can set it to
    something more meaningful than 3258w9esdzf289

Best of both worlds, so to speak.

    I'll never finish it, mind.

  14. Staffs is Midlands. On the M6 corridor, The North starts at Cheshire;
on the M1, it's South Yorkshire, or Derbyshire if you're being
    charitable.

    HTH.

    charitable... inaccurate you mean.

Derbyshire is in the Midlands, The North starts with Sheffield.

It has a certain robust, naive charm of its own, but at the end of the day
it's a poor substitute for the genuine article.
