Had a problem with my Fox-box on Monday. Told it to record something, it
said no, I won't. So Icalled Foxtel and spoke to a girl named Sam. Sam said
I had to unplug the power lead from the back of the box for ten seconds,
then press a couple of buttons simultaneously. Did that, no fix. Sam asked
if I had unplugged the power cord from the back of the unit, I said no, it's
a bit hard to get to so I unplugged the lead from the power point. She said
we weren't going to get anywhere if I didn't follow her instructions to the
    letter.

Oh Geezus, what a bright person to have on a help desk. Another techo called
me back ten minutes later and we managed to reset the box and it's working
    again.

  2. Did she have a thick Indian accent? When dealing with call centres
I've found it easier to pretend I'm following the instructions they're
reading (without comprehension) from their computer screen. Meanwhile
the laptop (it's usually a laptop, though I have been asked if I would
mind rebooting our server with ~100 users logged on!) remains idle on
the desk while they painfully reach the conclusion that it was the part
I asked for at the start of the call.

    No. Dinky-di Ozzie accent.
I should have said I unplugged the other end of the cord, yes.

Funny names some women have these days. Sam from Foxtel I can deal with, but
my new Telstra rep is Jonni, pronounced Johnny. What were her parents
    thinking?

Hehe I've resorted to those tactics now too. One call I was on for over an
hour while "Tony" asked me umplug this, press that, hold this in. I happily
played along pretending I was doing it, all the while doing nothing. After
about an hour, he agreed the problem probably was what I said it was and
called a aprts replacement as per my original request.

  9. I've spoken to someone at TPG support who went to the same school as Sam
    - I'm sure of it.

  11. I noticed, and wondered whether you were seriously bidding for it, or
somehow knew just how far you could go without getting lumbered with it.

If the former - bad luck.
    If the latter - thanks.

From my experence selling shocks on e-bay a Ohlins like yours would max out
    at about $450.

  14. Too fucking long! They are one of two "preferred suppliers". Actually
their laptops are ok as far as laptops go, but we bought a lab (20) of
desktop pcs a couple of years ago. It wont happen again. They got
bitten by the bulging capacitor problem (due allegedly to the dodgey
electrolyte recipe thingo) and with a heavy heart I rang them expecing
much puzzlement over requesting 20 replacement mainboards without
running their diagnostics 20 times over but it was approved without a
murmur. Google reveals that the Optiplex GX270 has been plauged
worldwide by the bulging caps so that probably helped my cause...

Total cost? A few bucks. Not many people repair their own motherboards
    these days.
