I know that I'm still new to all of this kind of stuff, but even
though I have one of the gayest looking helmets around at the moment
(OGK with sticky-outy bits) I have to say that it's really quiet
compared to my old HJC Sy-Max. Also, the wind seems to go around it
far more, and I don't find that my head is being buffeted around
anymore so I prefer it. I didn't realise that there was such a
    difference between the different designs.

Most bikers don't, most bikers only ever buy one helmet in their lives,
why should the industry that manufactures for that market give a toss
about it's customers? It is not as if there is a lot of repeat business
to be had, the repeat market is the competitive one.

    That's very sound.

I've lost count of the times I've seen people riding around with
scraped and scratched helmets that have obviously been "used" before.
I even saw a motorcycle rider in Woolies t'other day DROP his helmet
with a very large bang and pick it up after a roll. "They're
expensive things to drop," said I. "Naa, I'm always doing it, the
bumps touch up easily enough and polish out" said he.

    Yes and....

TBH the only reason I replaced my X-Lite was because the fixtures and
fittings had started coming apart. I don't give a toss about the
scratches, it's only slight surface damage innit?

Think about it for a mo. A racing lid is allowed 3 trips down the road
for a long way at very high speed and is considered ok for at least one
more. So dropping yerrat on Woolies impact absorbing, foot comforting,
special expensive shopper friendly rubber floor is hardly likely to do
    it much damage is it?

    Once or twice.

Are El Cheapo helmets made out of the same stuff as a £480 Shoei?

    Probably.

There is two[1] sorts of construction these days: Glass or carbon and
or kevlar fibre glued together with various epoxies or plastics and
injection moulded poly carbonate ones. Either style and the
technologies for production are pretty much identical for cheap or dear
    lids.

As with all aspect of motorcycle protective clothing, price is no guide
    to construction method or quality.

[1] Compressed cardboard, of the sort used by coal miners for hundreds
of years, seems to have fallen out of favour.

Should one replace a helmet after one big bump?

Ideally, yes. I didn't think yours warranted replacement. Auvache is
talking bollocks when he says most bikers buy just one helmet in their
life. There's a big repeat market in the helmet business.

The back of my HJC had a large dent and hole in it, the visor just
looked better in the photo (white scratches on visor vs black on
black) which is a secondary reason for replacing it. The primary
reason was that it opened up exposing my face to a potential road
facing slide. However, if I was giving anyone a ride, I would give
them my new helmet and I'd wear the HJC.

It's an expensive item to replace, but helmets that open that easily
("open" button on the outside) do cause me to worry now. I suppose
it's best to stay rubber side down, though.

Well I thought that if there is one thing we could learn from statistics
is that most bikers start young and finish not much older. One scoot/cb
125 when they are 16 and then they are cage drivers from then on. One
bike early in your life equates to one helmet. The repeat business is
only for a minority of bikers.
