You don't wanna try the latter for too long. Even the best known maker
of such devices warn against doing so for more than 50 miles iirc, due
to the output shaft spinning without the oil pump running.

Uh huh. Have you seen the size of an MX5's boot?

Surely nobody has an MX5 as their only car though, unless they really
    are a hairdresser?

Indeed. I have a natty three cycle Thule tow-bar mounted job for the
Mazda 6. It features a cunning hinging bit that allows the tailgate to
be opened with bikes still loaded on the rack (it swings down out of the
way). Very quick to deploy. Takes a bit of storage space TBF, but I keep
it hung on a couple of big hooks in the garage when not in use.

I've also had two different tow bar mounted motorcycle carriers. The
last one carried the lad's YZ85. The first one, years ago, the SWM 250.
Though on one occasion it was pressed in to service for a very short
distance recovery of the Morini - which it managed without drama, though
it was mounted on a reasonably heavy Opel Rekord estate.

I had one for my KTM 520SX, it was fucking brilliant & I never had a problem
    with it at all.

  10. I don't have a tow bar, but as it's only as a favour to my brother to
whom I am lending the car, I don't want to have to buy one .

  11. Never had a problem, and I towed a CanAm hundreds of miles like that.
It's always possible to take the chain off if you're really bothered.

I'm pretty sure not all bikes are created equal, in fact I think I have
seen in an owner's manual for one of my past or present bikes, a specific
warning against using one of these devices for this exact reason.
