Musings on next year's upgrade

It would appear that a year of carefully avoiding injuring myself or
others has given me a shiny new year of NCB and my insurance has pretty
much halved as a result. Which is nice.

So, I'm pondering whether to upgrade the SV next year or keep it. It's
perfectly competent and when ridden hard it's done a reasonable job of
keeping up with whoever I'm riding with, but frankly it's about as
stimulating and threatening as a sedated guinea pig.

So I've been thinking about maybe an SV1000. I know they're not exactly
rocketships, but even something medium-sized like a GSXR750 comes in at
about a grand and a half to cover (compared to under 350 quid for the SV
    thou).

So, suggestions/comments? Other than pukka litrebikes, that is...

about as unpopular as the SV - TDM900

Not ridden the 900 but the later version of the 850 was fun on twisty roads

Steve H will be along in a minute to say they are unreliable & crap.

They're lumpy old pigs. I preferred my VTR1000.

Make sure you ride one/someone's before you buy, to see if you like
    the power delivery.

Triumph Daytona? It was pretty decent on insurance when I had mine,
about half the cost of the big four litrebikes. With a noisy can it
    should be reasonably stimulating.

I looked at getting an SV thou, as I'd loved my 650. All reports were
that it wasn't what I was after, which was the same bike with more go
and better handling. I didn't bother trying one, which perhaps I should.

I'm not sure you're going to get threatening and low insurance.

    <runs quick quote through H&R>

Hmm, same as an SV thou. That's a bit of a change from previous
    speculative quotes.

Define soon, and how much? Also bear in mind that you say you're
thinking about getting a newer SV650, and I've got a near mint 3000 mile
    SK5 sitting in the garage...

  8. Nobody, but nobody, seems to have anything positive to say about them.
    Just: "They're OK...."

If you want a V-twin, and don't want a Ducati, try an Aprilia, and if
you don't want a crouch-on sports bike, make it a Falco.

What he says. Except they stopped making them some time ago, so you
    won't get anything particularly new.

if you want "stimulating and threatening", how about a TL1000S.

Your SK5 is worth a fair bit less than my Daytona, probably about 800 to
1000 less[1], so shall we start negotiating how much less and how much
    comes my way?

[1] Have you checked the for sale section on sv650.org , there's a few
mint low mileage K5s on there for less than £2800. Some of them are even
black, and not <shudder> red and with shitloads of extras thrown into
    the deal.

What's the mileage on yours, when are you thinking about making the
change, and shall we take this to email?
What kind of mentalist would have a red SV650 anyway?

70s Italian is needed to achieve this.

"downright terrifying and low insurance." you need 70s Japanese.
