  1. Sounds like the rest of the pop music business to me..[1]

    Phil.

[1] This (of course) is a sweeping generalisation. Live with it.

  2. Burn the heretic!

It has to be said that I quite enjoy Radiohead (and REM). But then I
like all sorts music (apart from Opera).

  3. Happy Birthday Mr C. [1]

[1] one thing he won't disagree with me on [2] ;-)
    [2] I can dream I suppose [3]
[3] bet he disagrees with it on purpose.

  4. I was strongly tempted to repeat Porl's question but I'll just do a
    <chuckle> instead.

    So why "detest"?

It does seem that you are simply regurgitating popular misconceptions and
the opinions of the red tops; particularly as his actions within the
party were far from those of someone "hopeless".

I never saw him as patronising and certainly not dull. Perhaps
explaining the policies and thinking that people wanted to actually
discuss the proposals rather than receive a thirty second soundbite
suitable for those incapable of forming their own opinion is windbaggery

He's renown for some dynamic speeches and facing up to the problems in
the party: "The obscenity of a Labour council, a Labour council, hiring
    taxis to distribute redundancy notices".

Most definitely not "dull, patronising and hopeless". I say this as
someone who actively opposed him during the 80/90s.

But you give /no/ reasons is that because there are /no/ reasons?

    Tell me why.

There are some excellent turns of phrase in nearly all his songs. I have
a lot of happy memories of seeing him live.

One of my all time favourite party conference speeches.
Why did you oppose him? Don't tell me you were pals with dear old Derek
    Hatton and the Liverpool mob?

It's such, such a long time ago....

Certainly wasn't in defence of the Trots but there were some very
unpleasant purges and, almost, showtrials. Particularly around the time
of the Poll Tax when Labour councils and councillors refused to set
charges or commit to trial non-payers.

Kinnock's attacks on the miners were a bit of an eye opener.

The Labour party is, for me, the political wing of the Trade Unions and
the move away from that, the embracing of privatisation, the rule changes
that attempted to emasculate the General Committees and a rush towards a
culture of electoral success at /any/ price.

The seeds he sowed meant Blair didn't come cheap...

And as you point out they also invariably have an unpleasantly garnished
