  1. Well duh! [1]
So is it the songs or their success that winds you up then?

[1] sorry but this was an ideal opportunity to road test that phrase for
the first, and probably last, time.

Ry Cooder fans should listen to Safe As Milk for completeness,
though I think that Dropout Boogie was done better by Edgar Broughton.

I quite like Unconditionally Guaranteed but it might be because I saw
Captain Beefheart in 1974 during the tour for that album.

It would be better with a comma and will probably go quite nicely when
    run in.

Blimey. I like The Smiths, Radiohead, The Fall, Joy Division and
    Interpol; I'm perfectly jolly.

Fucking exactly. What the hell is it with all thes "miserable" crap? No one
ever told Nick Drake or Ian Curtis to cheer up. Since when does all music
have to be cheerful? Obviously there's an interest is happy music for the
terminally self-obsessed, wannabee manic depressives in here but basically,
    **** 'em.

Which is exactly why they sell a lot of merchanside and fill stadiums, like
    Elton John and U2.

When it comes down to it if YOU the listener don't like it then that's
sufficient reason not to like them. But to me Coldplay sound like Radiohead
in the same way that Hawkwind sound like Iron Maiden or Judie Tzuke sounds
like Carly Simon, or Mozart sounds like Beethoven.
I think Radiohead are clever and inventive musically and I think Coldplay
write some catchy tunes and there my interest pretty much rests. It's not of
interest to me that the singers might have a similar cadence or dynamic to
    their style of singing.
Likewise it barely impacts my world at all how far the media has launched
them into the starry heavens above or how far the Great British Public is
attempting to pull them back down again. In fact, apart from occasionally
listening to their albums if I feel in the mood, the only time I hear about
them is a bunch of people in here who are so intensely affected by a couple
of pop groups that they FUCKING HATE THEM and this I find quite amusing. And
makes me feel quite superior come to that. Thanks guys.

*mad giggle* Yeah cos there's a really fucking shortage of that around,
    isn't there?

If the only sign of growing older is a lack of inclination to throw tantrums
over who's the best pop group then I think I can accept the grumpy old man
    tag.

Why? It sounds as if you're just repeating the press of the day.

I'm genuinely interested though, as without Kinnock the Labour Party may
never have recovered from the 1983 debacle and the entryism of the
    early/mid eighties.

I'm not sure if you'd like the Royle Family, although it doesn't rely on
humiliation or cringe making embarrassment to be funny so it overcomes
    that hurdle.

Actually it isn't really funny in a "Lords a lawky my trousers have come
down, vicar" way, more "gently amusing".

    I liked it.

Perhaps someone *should* have told Ian Curtis to cheer up a bit.
