Multiple SCART Problem

I have a SCART related difficulty. I've recently acquired a PVR (many
thanks to Higgins) but don't have enough SCART sockets on my TV (many
thanks to darsy) for the Cable box (thanks to Virgin/NTL), DVD/HDD
recorder (many thanks to me), PS2 (many thanks to Ben) and the said PVR.

The television has two sockets and (I think) the deterioration of the
analogue signal going through all the boxes means I'm going to have to
find a way of connecting all the various things to the television and not
    rely on the coax leads.

    Will this be a solution?
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=L07BB&DOY=20m6

How does it know which one to display and how will it work in practice?

Currently the cable box is connected to the television with the aerial
lead and a SCART to the DVD/HDD recorder. The DVD/HDD is attached to AV1
with a SCART lead. The PVR is attached to AV2. The PS2 is looking
forlorn with its lead on the floor.

Or would some form of signal booster be the answer to cure the grainy
feed to the television - that goes Cable box > PVR > DVD/HDD?

It'll work as long as they're not all trying to play at once!

As you have two recorders (PVR & DVD/HDD) you want to make your
mind up which one records which source (Cable or Aerial) as there's
no point in it doing both?

    So something like:

    Cable > HD/DVD > AV 1

    Aerial > PVR > Multi > AV 2
    PS2 > "

That way you can record from the cable box using the HD/DVD, as long
    as
it has a pass-through so you can just watch Cable too. You can record
through the aerial to your PVR or play on the PS2.

BTW, if you want one of those multi-way scart boxes, they have
them in my local Pound shoppe, so best you check your local
one and save a bit of cash!

Partly. It will work, but may be irritating in practice.
It will probably show the last device to be turned on.
    These rock mightily

I've got a SCART switching unit if you want it, 4 x SCART (1xtv,
    3xSCART I/P and 6xphono). [1]

[1] Bought over a year ago, never used and unopened, a couple of beer
vouchers at the next 'osm if you want it. http://tinyurl.com/5sfqs6

Ive got one of these: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=4724&criteria=scart&doy=21m6

Does the job - just lets you select the source to view. Bought one
about 10 years ago and it was getting flaky - £15 for a new one. New
model is more robust and solid (metal case rather than plastic).

I've got a two way scart switcher that you can have for postage costs (or UR
it) which would help , and as long as one other bit of equipment has two
scars so you can daisy-chain things then you're sorted.

Quote from the FAQ on those devices:-
    Q) if i connect two units (dvd player and sky unit), does the unit
which is most recently switched on have the priority ? - colin campbell
    A) these are unswitched so if 2 inputs are on at the same time it will
display both - causing problems - L08BJ would be a better solution with
    automatic switching

    So its a bit thick.

I'd use the other one they recommend, as that works the way you want

Have you noticed how the HDMI equivalent bits cost 5 times as much?

Fucking unwanted HDCP crap forcing the price up I bet.

Well it's gonna be a tad more complex shifting that digital stuff around.

If they didn't have the HDCP digital security sessions and other
complicated two way gubbins it'd be a hell of a lot easier and cheaper.

    <shrug>

The DVDO switcher I've got can take a number of HDMI inputs, SVideo,
RGB, analogue and digital audio, scales from anything to anything and
has a number of other tricks up its sleeve (positive and negative audio
delay for one - brilliant!) but it did cost half as much as the plasma.

No use to man nor dog. Its for splitting out 1 signal to more than one
    VCR or device.

For the input side you'll need an amplifiying video switch.
    such as
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=97941&doy=search

    You prod the appropriate button.

That's exactly the kind of thing we have at home. Works a treat, so long
as you're not hopping between sources too often.
