Mugged!

  1. That some people are are mindless morons? That the police are busy,
    under-resourced and sometimes helpless?

None of which will exactly be news to a teenager.
And set that against: his parents are quite prepared to break the law
and lower themselves down to the moral and ethical level of the thugs
    that beat him up.

Which combines with the low points of what he already knows (see above)
with the low points of being taught *by his parents* that it's OK to
break the law (in a serious way) just to make them feel better?

Which would you rather have a teenager learn? That sometimes you have
to put up with things for the sake of ethics? Or that it's OK to
    discard them when convenient?
Depends on the kid. There is a reason why most old societies had boys
coming of age at 13-14 - that was about the time when adult mentalities
    are starting to emerge..
No - the mindset that it is perfectly OK to ignore the law when it
suits you. And I'm not talking about 'crimes' like speeding - I'm
talking about causing serious harm to another human being just to sate
    your own appetite for revenge.
Well - hanging didn't work. Neither did flogging. And they tried the
'short sharp shock' and guess what - that failed too. They tried
deportation - and the result was Australia..

So unless you want to country to descend into anarchy ("he looked at me
funny so I killed him") then I would suspect that vigilantieism isn't
    the answer.

  4. Chances are that the CPS will decide not to prosecute the little
darlings. However, should anything happen to them you'll be in the
frame unless you're prepared to wait for a long time.

  5. 3rd attempt at reply. Bloody computers.

I think you know I understand. Just not "comfortable" with it.

It's most strange to be on the same side of an argument as Champ, Ace,
Ogden and you. One or two yes, all four - I feel slightly soiled TBH.

  7. Perhaps I've got a bit cynical since I've been living in a country where
the authorities are even more corrupt than in the UK.

But yes, I believe that you believe yourself.

  8. What? All those power cuts and the TV going off at 10:00 every night in
the early 70's didn't create a baby boom?

I stayed right out of this whole thread! are you proud of me then, Eh?
    are you!

Nobody got it quite right IMHO.
That there is any problem at all in dealing with the most unfortunate
event is that said CJS does not operate effectively. In these areas it
is completely bankrupt. It appears to have no democratic mandate.

You forgot to add : we have no power to stop said morons from doing
    moronic things.
I doubt a young teenager will understand the morals and ethics of
"lowering ourselves to their level", which isn't true anyway. The
scrotes beat people up for fun (its not needed if they just wanted to
steal stuff), if we beat the scrotes up its to teach them a lesson, not
for fun. There is a difference.
Why "just to make them feel better"? As you said, all other techniques
have failed, this may be the only type of lesson they learn from, a
    deterrant.
I don't believe in the "the lord will judge them when they die so lets
all do nothing and let them rampage as much as they want" POV.
The law is meaningless if no one upholds it. The general public are
powerless, and backup-less to uphold it, because the police do not
care, because the courts are a joke.
You obviously do not belive that teaching the scrotes that if they hurt
other kids (or vandalise, etc), when they are caught they will be
punished (by plain old simple pain) will deter them. What do you think
it will teach them, after they've been caught quite a few times?
    So what is?

Paul Carmichael came up with the following;:
    No, he's not.

He's absolutely spot on, really. It's just that the little bastards know
they can't be got by the system 'cos the system, locally, doesn't work.

I wish it did, but it doesn't, so we fixed it ourselves. Now that's worked,
    for now.

    Ace scribbled:
Is the motivation the point, or is it how the scrotes behave
afterwards? I'd say the outcome is the more important point. If it
stops them beating someone else up, whatever the reason that provoked
    the action is irrellevant.

And thinking of "violence/deterrent never works", how come everyone
says that the only way to stop a bully at school is to go up to them
and thump them on the nose as hard as possible? And it works too.

Ace came up with the following;:
Yes I do. I was being flippant, a little.

What I meant was that he had no need to know *anything*, but that he'd
eventually find out, as kids do, on the grapevine that they had got what
    they were owed.

    Ace scribbled:
The point being what "deserves it" means. On one hand its simply
"because he was there and looked at me funny" as opposed to "he's a bad
person and hurts others for fun".

He does, it's just different from yours.

Even the scrotes have a moral code, it's just different.
