I've always taken it that "mardy" means you're a bit of a cry-baby,
whereas "mard-arsed" implies the spiteful/sulky elements too. It's an
    odd turn of phrase really.

You don't seem to be able to argue very well. All your posts can be
easily summarised into "But it's not fair!"

"Mard" means "soft", "weak", or "cowardly" in Lancashire... FWIW

  8. Which we don't. Not within the law anyway.
Then I suspect you have a very low opinion of the abilities of
    teenagers.
It doesn't work. Time and time again it has been proved that deterrance
    doesn't work.
    Neither do I.
Because it never has before. Think about the 17th Century in England -
everyone knew that stealing (sometimes even just stealing some bread to
stay alive!) was a one-way trip to the gallows. Yet crimes of theft
were rife. Which would seem to indicate that the ultimate deterrance
    had no effect.

  9. And it's what's known as 'a subjective judgement'. In some places and
times just looking at someones unwed daughter/sister was grounds for
the fathers/brothers to visit with nasty sharp pointed instruments -
and for their society that was the norm.

Our society is not homogenous - the level of insult/injury/pride hurt
is heavily dependent of cultural background and age.

What you may think constitutes 'deserves it' is very very different
from what I may think constitutes 'deserves it'.

Which is why we have laws so that society as a whole can decide not
only what constitutes 'deserves it' but also sets an appropriate level
    of deterrence/punishment/removal from society.

And under the framework of laws that we have it is illegal for you to
take the law into your own hands. Doing so makes you as much of a
criminal as the person that you think 'deserves it'.

Bollocks, one just has to find the right, possibly draconian, deterrent.
I'm not saying we should, but it is possible.

  18. Because I don't believe it. And neither should anybody who professes to
a belief in a higher power (God, gods, fate - call it what you will).

OK - lets amend my original to "in my opinion it is wrong".
