I was once knocked out cold by a shoplifter (many, many years ago now),
and I did end up being awarded compensation. However, this came out of
said lifter's own pocket. Which was nice.

Heh. Best compliment I've had for a while.

Not too far off the mark - 31 last birthday.

I was 17 when it happened.

  17. That would be different. That has the elements of punishment and
retribution, rather than simply grabbing dosh from the public purse.

When the road rage incident (from when the guy in the flash merc
attacked me last year) came to court the judge ordered the bloke to
pay me compensation based on the injuries received.

I also made the decision not to fill in the CICB forms that came from
the police and I hadn't realised that the court could make this order.

I think the judge was a bit pissed off at the way he had messed around
(long story) and she took each separate scratch and bruise and awarded
the full amount from her guidelines. I spoke to her briefly afterwards
and said that TBH I'd rather she'd have given him a community service
order and got nothing myself as his fine and the compensation order
were simply a matter of him waving his cheque book and making it go
    away.

  19. It'll still hurt him and act as some sort of a deterrent which, IMHO, an
award from a public fund won't.

No, you misunderstand. That "Not at all" is meant as "I don't dislike
you". I can see it's easily read both ways.
