Yes; all this is true. But that's not the reason or justification they
gave at the time is it?

It is when you post it in answer to the "what was the reason given..."
    question.
    ~
Quote you? What; when I need an example of how twisted history becomes in
    your hands?

The reason the Australian government gave to the Australian public to
justify supporting America's upcoming invasion of Iraq was that we were in
    immediate danger from Iraq's WMDs.
You can quote me on that (and then people mightn't laugh so hard at you)

I don't call them, see them as or refer to them as towelheads.

I don't have a problem with arabs. To infer that I abhor them so much as
to call them by such a derogatory appellation is akin to labelling me a
    racist.
    Since when?...

Will you stop agreeing with me Clem.

Do you really expect any Prime Minister to say we are going along with the
Yanks and giving them token support because if we ever get in the shit with
the countries from the north our armed forces would not last 10 minutes and
we are shit scared of eating rice for the rest of our short miserable lives,
and we would really appreciate the USA sending us some of their conscripted
underclass to bleed for us and bail us out?

Let a speech writer loose on that one and see how it comes out.

The average Australian is more comfortable with being told about WMD's on
the other side of the planet in one huge pile of sand than face the truth
about our own defensive inadequacies. Or perhaps we should ask the Mother
Country to come and help us out (don't hold your breath). Then again we
could rely on the good old Kiwi's to help us (they could come over and bore
    the enemy to death).

Additionally we have an operational requirement to occasionally let our
troops do what they were trained for, this ensures that they don't get bored
painting rocks for a living and we get some value for the Billions we spend
on Defence. I know the SAS are thrilled to bits to be able to blow a few
things up and fire off their latest gat in the two way firing range.

This is a direct answer, Clem. Unambiguous.

*The number one reason we invaded Iraq is because Iraq wouldn't permit
    UN weapons inspections.*

If they had've, no invasion would have taken place.

    Who cares ? We don't. It's irrelevant.
Yet more proof of your inability to operate on the same planet as
everyone else. Nobody said, stated, inferred or implied racism on your
part. Take your attempt to divert the conversation into a cul de sac,
    and stow it.

Is "reds under the bed" racism against American Indians ? Thats about as
    rational as you are being.
Your own posts over the last 4 weeks - there are at least 4 derogratory
comments in there off the top of my head (go on, finding them will give
    you something to do).

Huh ? So Blix didn't exist ? And his call for Bush to hold off while he
    finished didn't happen ?

Yeah right, it was an excuse, if they'd complied in full then the US
would have come up with another one. There was no way Saddam was getting
out of being invaded, it's been in Cheney's game plan from before he got
    elected.

I think most rational people would buy that (ie excluding Doug), and I
think pretty much most people did figure that was the case. The question
is why couldn't he have just said that - I'm sorry but the spin doctors
can talk about our mutual defence agreements and such - at least we
wouldn't have been lied to. It's not like Howard took the slightest
notice of the protests anyway, so why couldnt he just be honest ?
Oh rubbish, we are being lied to because we don't want to hear the truth
? Come on give me a break. IIRC surveys before we went had about 60 or
70% not believing that Saddam with or without WMDs was the slightest
    threat to us.
Everyone knows we have limited defence resources. Those who think
Indonesia is our main threat however are kidding themselves - they
neither have the money nor the capability. The TNI with full weaponry
and proper training are a very small force, most of Indonesia's army are
poorly resourced and poorly trained, they're half arsed Dad's Army types
.. If Indonesia even thought they could make an invasion of Oz stick
they'd have already done it. The chinese on the other hand have the
history, the capability, and the willingness. And we have a lot of
primary resources. The US army however are very unlikely to protect us
from China (anymore than they'll protect Taiwan - who WILL get invaded
in the next decade if they dont roll over and rejoin the mainland).

Sucking up to the US is actually a waste of time, they're not going to
protect us against our only viable threat, and Oz IS capable of fending
off Indonesia (there's a reason why we built JORN - it gives us the
chance to pick 'em off in the water while they're vulnerable).

If China decides to roll in down the peninsula and island hop across
then it's WW2 again and I'd be surprised if the yanks bought into it,
but quite frankly if they did it wouldn't because we went to Iraq with
them - 99.99% of the US dont even know we're there - Ities and the Japs
get more publicity than our forces do. If the did back up to China it
would be because theyre too dependent on Korea, Taiwan and Malaysia for
cheap electronics than any other reason.

If he'd complied with UN demands he'd still be running Iraq. The U.S.
would never have been able to gain enough support for an invasion if
    that had've happened.

You're off with the pixies Doug, he kicked and he squirmed, but he did
comply, if you go back to the newspaper archives you'll find quotes from
the white house about how he's run out of time - because they knew if
they didn't get in there quick their excuse was going to disappear and
they weren't wanting to have to make up a new one

In other words, the public wants to and needs to be deceived...

....from the bottom of my heart, John, **** you and **** the cynical
bitch who gave birth to you.
So, where's the precedent for the US giving two shits about us?

They were too busy to help us during the Malay Emergency and the West
Papua Crisis; instead, they got us to volunteer troops for Vietnam a few
    years later.

I raised this a number of posts back; you ignored it.

Or is the US alliance another pillar of the safety blanket the public
should be kept wrapped up in?
Kinda like what we did in Timor, the Solomons, Rwanda, Somalia,
    Cambodia, Afghanistan, among others, maybe?

Kinda like what the Navy and the Air Force are doing off the coast of
    WA, interdicting Indonesian fish poachers?

Bleh. What happened to the Russians in Chechnya would happen to the

So you admit that you are unwilling to answer the question.
By logical progression you also admit that you were attempting to deceive
when you tried to claim that my original; statement "Our "reason" was the
imminent threat from the WMDs ...." was incorrect.

Yes you're right; it IS unambiguous.
