Following NotTims advice... snip some SMEE - He is doing it again! ---> thier Get into him Johno Beer?
If we come up with an objective measurement of living standards being impacted would you stand behind that comment (noting that no one - other than yourself is suggesting it's going to make much difference either way to unemployment). I would suggest the following, assuming the ABS provides updates regularly enough to be able source the data in 18months: Average wage of the lowest 15% of income earners I would also suggest that ACOSS could probably provide data on the financial impact on single parents working part time Also average # of hours worked by uni students (will have to go up as they will be being paid less for the same job, but they'll still need the same amount to live on) All of the above I predict will be impacted negatively by the changes. It's the working poor this is targetted at, and if that's not a classic case of the Liberal party's screwing the weak for no positive benefit to the economy I don't know what is. JL (didn't use to be a policy plank as far as I'm aware)
I looked it up for WA on http://www.docep.wa.gov.au/lr/Labou...ions/Workplace Issues/Pages/Jury Service.html Employees are occasionally required to attend jury duty. Employers are not required to pay employees while they are on jury duty, but must provide them with leave without pay for the period needed to carry out the duties of a juror. If employers do pay employees, employers can seek reimbursement of the employee's pay from the Sheriff's Office. If employees are not paid, they can seek similar reimbursement. Tough, no pay, but you can beg from the Government for your four weeks pay.. Theo
X-No-archive: yes I'm happy with 911x1000. ~ No of course not; but the reason fed to the Australian public as justification for the attack was that we were in iminent danger. ~ That'll keep you warm while you're working part time at McDonalds....
Worked for me too. I was selected on the jury for a murder trial. After I sat down in the box I was told to piss off. Whoohoo! Theo
X-No-archive: yes Gary Woodman wrote in message ... None of my brothers have ever been called for jury duty but my married sisters both have. My surname must have a black mark against it...... Clem
ABS would be one of the most reliable sources of data, generally it is not spun for the benifit of one particular group. ACOSS are a self serving critic of any Government. Who electes these people? Its like the Pedestrian Council. They could make a saving when Compulsory Student Union Fees are abolished. I disagree that these changes are targeted at the working Poor, in my view more jobs will become available. Perhaps we should also include the Participation Rate as a relative measure.
What about the oil? Attempted assassination on former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, yes. A lot of septics'd think that anyway. I've seen nothing to convince me that Iraq was directly involved with the September 11 attacks. Iraq was the only nation that actually hailed the attacks. Not surprising as they'd been attacking coalition aircraft enforcing the UN's no-fly zones for eleven years. The zones that were set up to ensure the safety of the Kurds in the north and the shiites in the south. Mostly with missiles, sometimes with fighter aircraft and helicopters. Civilian air traffic from other nations were challenging the zones, knowing that the US wouldn't shoot down a civilian passenger aircraft. The zones were breaking down. Our own ships have been in the gulf since 1991. The Iraqi people were suffering from a lack of food and medical aid, not due to the UN sanctions which allowed these necessities but because the food and medical aid was sold off by Saddam to increase his personal wealth. The Oil-for-food scandal was another example of how Saddam managed to increase his wealth while supposedly "contained". Iraq had never lived up to it's obligations under the terms of the ceasefire after the 1991 Gulf War, including, among other things, reparations to Kuwait and never gave, as was required, a full accounting of their weapons and weapons programs. There's a lot more but I don't feel like writing a book today. Look up John Howard's speech (link below) committing us to Operation Iraqi Freedom. That pretty much covers it. You mean the UN had teams. http://tinyurl.com/9md9k "18 March 2003 TRANSCRIPT OF THE PRIME MINISTER THE HON JOHN HOWARD MP ADDRESS TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, PARLIAMENT HOUSE, CANBERRA". If you're gunna read it, be fair dinkum and read the *whole* thing, not just the bits that say WMD. There is no "underlying" agenda. I never liked football of any code. More of a geek, really. I like Holdens but have had many more Fords 'cos they're cheaper and I don't really like cars. Last car was an old Ford Laser that I bought off the ex for five hundred bucks and ran that round until it died of multiple organ failure after three years of abuse and neglect. Dumped it twelve months ago. Don't have a car now but I've just been *given* an XJ900 in fair condition... Sounds right to me. No, just conviction. Don't feel bad, it's often lacking in the left.
I've got one ABBA album, new in 1976, it's still never been played. Someone with doubtful taste gave it to me as a birthday present. Al
That explains my disdain. They don't play music. Go ahead and listen anyway. Do you have a choice of radio station at home? I got a choice only after the kids left. Theo
Tell that to the dead. You're funny. That's the way an accountant might look at it. I'm not a cop. I'm a firefighter. We don't keep 'em off the road, we sweep 'em off the road. So how much of my training can I safely neglect because it deals with situations that are only remotely possible?... Join up. Get promoted to the top. Then what you deem sensible will matter. I'm responding to Nev's post. It was Clem that tried to link our actions in Iraq with an increased threat of terrorism. Oh, well, **** 'em then. Can you guarantee that it won't?...
Please tell me you're being tongue in cheek there. Saving $300 in order to pay more for a heap of stuff isn't going to make any student better off, it will however silence a few more voices of dissent. More jobs may become available, however participation rate is a poor measure of well being - when a single parent is forced to work an additional 14 hours a week to get the same income, participation rate is up but both personal and social benefit is down (the extra income will disappear in child care costs because they've now got more hours to cover, and the child's welfare is worse). When a uni student has to work an extra job on top of the existing one they're working to get back to the same income, participation will be up but their studies will suffer. We already have extremely low unemployment, we're down to the structural rate plus or minus a percentage point, far lower than most of the OECD, this is fixing something that isnt broken. JL
