Terrorists are getting much smarter these days, I have it on good authority
that some of the Bastards are spreading gravel on tight corners.

Don't worry Clem, its only the Transvestite Terrorists that have 44 gallon
    drums of nail polish remover.

I'm wondering if this is a slogan you've picked up somewhere, or the full
    extent of your understanding.

"The riots were sparked by the deaths of African youths, not Muslims.
Singling out the persons of Muslim heritage is just a form of bigotry.
Moreover, French youth of European heritage rioted quite extensively in
1968. As they had in 1789. Rioting in the streets is not a foreign custom.
It has a French genealogy and context."

    http://www.juancole.com/2005/11/problem-with-frenchness-readers-have.html

"The low-income housing estates that ring Paris and other big French cities
are dumping grounds for everybody that hasn't made it in the cool 21st-
century France of the urban centers, the old white working class as well as
immigrants from France's former colonies in Arabic-speaking North Africa and
sub-Saharan black Africa and from all the poorer countries of Europe.
Unemployment there is often twice the national average of 10 percent. But
they are not Muslim- or even nonwhite-majority communities."

In the meantime, here's what real French Muslims say about the rioting:

    Are you kidding?!!?
Just because Nev hasn't been sacked YET (even though the new IR laws
haven't been ratified yet [rat=rodent doesn't it?]) you reckon that's proof
he has nothing to worry about?!!
Fark me; can you prove a witch weighs the same as a duck too?
    Clem
[VERY worried that the new laws will affect his future plans]

RACV would only tow it to the nearest party-shop. (After that you'd have
    to visit a Party-hire!)

I disagree quite strongly with a lot of the things that Boxer has posted
here. (Same with Doug and even Smee, IK, GS and various others at times.)
Having met (and drank with) most of these people I've realised that there's
a lot more to a person than his-or-her strong opinions and it's folly to
sum a person up purely on what they've written here.
(I tried that once with BVR and I made a total dick of myself!)

I remember being floored with surprise once when Theo said his opinion of
me had dropped because I'd said I liked a certain song (or something
    equally trivial).

Yeah; I know that you have to use the available information to "assess"
people but you shouldn't really be carving anything in stone unless you
    absolutely need to.

(Which is pretty much what you wrote above, Moike)

Maybe not safety, but efficacy... once enough people are put out of
meaningful work by the changes, the pool from which unions will be able
to draw activists and volunteers will deepen; a person whose
38-hour-a-week job has recently dissolved into a shift here and a shift
there, or who's had to make a choice between having an income and
raising kids who develop into something other than sociopaths is going
to be quite motivated to express their frustration.

If in 18 months time unemployment has risen substantially and living
standards have dropped as a result of these IR changes I will be at the
front of the picket line and burning my party membership card. I just don't
think that will be the result.

    Or the one after that...

....when I've really sat down and thought about pulling up the tent pegs
    and fucking off someplace, I've ground to a halt at the first question;
    "Where?"

Continental Europe? Too crowded, lots of luck landing a job unless
you're the aboslute top of your field, sky-high cost of living...

    The UK? <crickets>...<distant cough>...

Canada? Too cold to ride all year round, real estate just as expensive
as here, swings and roundabouts where social services are concerned.

The US? Whenever Mrs IK visits there, it takes her a week to lose her
reactions to American food, water and, presumably, air. The social
climate makes Australia look like the garden of Eden.

NZ? Wonderful scenery, but far too many Kiwis have told me about how
    broke it is over there...

I'd love to join an aid organisation and travel to hellholes, lobbing
flour off the back of a truck and so on, but it's hard to do that
without some kind of base to come back to...

....unfortunately, I'll have to make a lot more money before I can
    indulge that particular altruistic impulse.

I have spend quite a bit of time in the back country of Colombia (South
Americia) good food, lots of fresh fruit, mangos everywhere, Beer 50 cents a
stubbie. Accommodation and Dinner and Breakfast about $5.00. if you stay
away from the area of Civil War it is a great hoilday, good bike riding
roads. I hooked up with a group of locals from Bogota riding XR600 hondas
and toured the mountains for 2 weeks and had a great time.

Depending on the newspaper you read or tv news report you watch, they've
been watching them for between 16 months and two years.

How sophisticated a threat did these guys really pose if they didn't
twig to being under surveillance for over a year?

But, yes, funny how, after an investigation that long, the cops and
spooks couldn't've either waited a couple more weeks or pounced a couple
of weeks earlier; instead, their raids end up bumping parliamentary
debate about the new IR laws off the front pages...

....the AFP and ASIO really appear to know who butters their bread.
