Perhaps with a protest of the Games get a legal opinion or clearance from
    the cops.

Finding quotes for the other two claims is left as an exercise for

Never said either. As a matter of fact, I would hope those muslims that
respect Australian law before sharia law would help rid their
communities of those who dishonour the name of their chosen religion.

    " Moderate Muslims welcome arrests

THE CLOUD of suspicion that hung over all Muslims and Arabs in Australia
would be lifted by the arrests yesterday in Sydney and Melbourne, a
    leading Muslim group said.

Australian Arabic Council secretary Martin Hosking described the arrests
as a "step forward, in the sense that matters which have been bubbling
along in the media are now firmly in the hands of the courts".

"We, like all Australians, welcome these arrests if they can improve our
security and we support the actions of the authorities in this regard,"
    Mr Hosking said.

"In some quarters there has been a cloud of suspicion hung over all Arab
Australians and Muslims (and) to the extent the arrests will help to
dissipate this cloud, they are to be particularly welcomed."

The president of Islamic Charity Projects Association in Australia, Dr
Ghayath Al-Shelh, said it was a mistake for Islamic leaders to complain
    about the arrests.

"I believe Muslims have suffered enough in the past from the acts of
    extremist groups," Dr Al-Shelh said.

"These arrests, and the anti-terror laws, will provide protection for
    the people." "
I doubt there'll be a senate majority next time.

Christ Doug; is this your new mantra?
"Well if you don't like it you can leave...." (Gee that just suits a
    southern drawl doesn't it)

I'd rather stay and try to help fix it. Maybe even get us back to the
happy-go-lucky days before a quarter of the planet hated us and people
could watch evening TV without being frightened. (Except by the hairdos)

It wasn't me who first suggested leaving, Clem. BTW, I'm a northerner.
I agree. However, some others feel like they should just take their
considerable tax contributions out of the country to punish us plebs for
voting for the only real alternative we had at the election last year.

I'd hoped we could survive without him, but as it turns out he's in no
hurry to leave, having found it quite comfy here thank you very much.

    God bless 'im...

  11. Very true.

I do believe that this job requires a more mature and well rounded person.
Min age should be late 20 or even early thirties. It is not a job that is
    suited to too many people.

So it _is_ ok to protest the Commonwealth Games now then?

A couple of points... some groups involved in those protests were not
causing any damage at all (although of course the media would ignore
those ones), and they are *doing* something... they are excercising
thier right to protest (well what was thier right anyway...).
So you admit that these measures are uncertain to work then!

Common sense isn't common... someone somewhere will fall under this
umbrella who otherwise would not. When they do that will be an injustice.
Myslef no... but this isn't just about terrorism. The fact that the
communist party was outlawed in the US but it wasn't outlawed here has
been raised earlier in the thread. I am not now, nor have I ever been,
nor would I ever be a member of the communist party. I do not support
thier aims, thier actions or thier members.

But I support the right those Australian citizens had to join that
    organization.

That right is now strongly restricted.
No I do not, nor do I support, in fact I am strongly against it. But in
a free country they should be permitted to say what they want, and that
should be countered in a way that is consistent with the way that a free
    country acts.
No I do not... but see above.
I think it's that white fertalizer isn't it? There was a ton or so of
white fertilizer lying in a paddock I drove past a couple of weeks ago
(I live in the country remember).
I do not, but free speech should allow that.
Any and all dissent? No... I don't think that. I think they are going
to use it to further restrict peoples right to free speech, to free
association and will use it to silence _some_ dissent.

What most concerns me is that _some_ dissent will include dissent that
is not terrorist related, but will be spun to 'have a terrorist risk',
like a possible Commonwealth Games protest, a possible WTO protest or a
    possible Pine Gap protest.

Can you say with certainty that no protest will be stopped by these
    laws? Because I can't...
