What was it that that nice Mr Nelson was saying about literacy and
    teachers?

Unless you are suggesting that he is fishing, the expression you are
    after is "toeing the line".
er... there's not a lot of logic there to see. AFAIK Boxer is not bound
by rules about cabinet solidarity. Even if he were a back bencher he
would be able to criticise policy if he wanted to.

(Did you say somewhere you had studied politics?)
always take mischievous[1] as a given with Hamish...

But you dismiss him at your peril.

    Moike

[1] There's that literacy thing again, the fact that "mischievious" is a
common misconstruction in place of "mischievous" doesn't make it correct
    or acceptable.

I don't. Wayne Gardner has one (he was the first, AFAICT), Mick Doohan has
two, my old mate Tony Cadet-James has one. For the record, other awardees
related to motorcycling were Geoff Ballard, Marion Burrow, Frank Hack, Bill
Street, Ralph Freeman, Claude Robertson, and Alan Wallis.

Agreed. The next step will be to make all Muslims carry identification. How
does a yellow Crescent sewn to their shirts sound? Then we will similarly
mark all their places of business. Just so we know which windows to break.
Will these new preventive detention centres have a sign over the gate "Work
    Makes You Free"?

    And so it continues.

    Even then, that's no guarantee.

A good friend of mine who's being doing police work for the past 25
years has a few stories to tell. Once, a druggie was out of control at a
domestic. Cops roll up. 3 of them wrestle with him to get him into the
back of the van. He was so hyped up, that he totally ignored any pain
    receptors' inputs.

He had his arms and legs outstretched across the door of the van. My
mate whomped him with his baton between the legs. All it did was to make
the druggie scream louder. Never flinched. A couple of those eventually
worked. No guns needed for that event, thankfully.

In another, again, domestic, public housing estate, etc (no that I'm
doing any social profiling, mind you..) a druggy came at him with an
axe. He shot him. Missed. Got him in the leg. Fellow still came
swinging, blood pouring out everywhere. A clout to the back of the head
from another copper soon dropped him, but it took some effort.

Both him and another friend of mine have been shot at, with the latter
in hospital for 6 months when the bullet passed through him and his
partner (yeah, another domestic in another public housing estate). So,
it's not hard to understand why these guys do what they do.

I won't mention the town. I think that it's had enough negative
publicity over the past few years, and ridicule on shows such as The
    Footy Show...

I'd agree. The system as it stands militates against competence and
encourages beige people with little in the way of positive values or
beliefs, just those who are good with favours.

I am not bound by a party code not to publicly criticise my colleagues, I an
bound by a personal code. As a member of a team I chose to criticise my
fellow team members in the confines of the party room and in person, and
have done so on many occasions. Should I strongly disagree with policy that
I am unable to change from within I chose to remain publicly silent (with
the possible excepting of that bloody GST).
