It's not a riot unless someone turns a car over and sets fire to it.

It's not an orgy unless there's peeled grapes.

Citizens suffering under truly repressive regimes got that way because
good people stood by and did nothing... I do not intend to stand by.
I wasn't talking about going to war in Iraq, I was talking about the
changes to the laws in Australia. Do you feel good about those law
changes because I do not... taking rights and liberties away from
innocent citizens to make it potentially easier to punish criminals is
    simply wrong.
You must live in a very strange world view...
There is still no evidence that these new laws will make that more
likely though. The most likely outcome is that these laws will not make
any differnce and things will happen as they would have happened anyway
but we will be left with more repressive laws.

Let me make this a little clearer. What do you do now that you won't be
able to do upon the passage of these laws?

Which keeps (deliberately I suspect) missing the point. There's concepts
like altruism and the wider social good that have disappeared from the
lexicon of the people who now stridently push policies like this.

Get the concept Doug, people can oppose something because it negatively
affects other people, even if it won't affect them.

I know this doesn't sit well with the current "it's all about me"
attitude of you guys, but it's a concept that has served the west well
    for millenia

Well he's too ashamed to put it on the table, so I'd say he secretly
    knows that.

So the car races at Bathurst are in a constant state of riot, on and off
    the track...

Too wimpish for bathurst, real men don't have orgies it seems...

You're the victim of American brainwashing again, the word liberal was
morphed by Americans to their meaning, from it's original meaning.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism

"Liberalism is an ideology, or current of political thought, which
strives to maximize individual liberty through rights under law"

Which is exactly what the Australian Liberal party _USED_ to stand for
    and no longer does.

Restriction of personal liberties for the benefit of the state is a
communist and Fascist plank. Hence the old comment about the further
left or right you go, the closer the two schools of thought come
together (which is a bit narrow, politics isn't 1D)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascist

"More generally fascism is typified by attempts to impose state control
over all aspects of life: political, social, cultural, and economic. The
definitional debates and arguments by academics over the nature of
fascism, however, fill entire bookshelves. There are elements of both
left and right ideology in the development of Fascism, but it generally
attracts political support from right-wing and ultra-conservative
    movements and electoral parties"

Liberal party stooges cannot talk about ir laws without towing the party
    line.
If you can't see the logic behind that then I'm afraid I'll have to
    dismiss your comments as mischievious.

It is very difficult for a honest community minded family orientated person
to achieve pre-selection in a winnable seat for any of the major parties.
Internal factional manoeuvring generally leaves most politicians with many
favours to give and backs to scrach.

Your argument loses credibility when you lower yourself to petty name
    calling.

Perhaps you are spending too much time in the playground?

  19. Just so you know, you _do_ get a lot of respect for that - even if I
don't agree with all of your opinions or with your choice of political
affiliation, I will happily acknowledge that you're actually _doing_
something with your opinions where I (and many like me) pretty much just
argue on usenet (or in pubs or cafes or wherever).

]You;re wrong, but I respect your active wrongness...

    :)

(And not even always wrong, I almost posted agreeing with you on your
    healthcare comment yesterday...)
