That is a threat to the Balinese... and to Australian tourists visiting
there, it can be avoided by _not_ visiting.

These laws are in response to a terrorist threat in other countries and
yet they are effecting this country (where there is no demonstrated threat).

That investigation and those arrests were conducted under existing
laws... in what way would the new laws have changed the outcome?

I said "Up to the point where circumstances dictate otherwise" which
equates to your line "except under the most extraordinary of circumstances".

We are at war, with a significant number of citizens who identify
    themselves as our enemy.

It is the view of a "raving loony" to deny there is a threat from
    islamic extremism worldwide.

In the words of David Hicks, they hope to unite the world under the rule
of an Islamic Caliphate, with sharia law for all.

Think about that while the Paris intifada continues...

Categorically not. It's a bunch of people creating nothing of any value,
can't see how that could possibly be considered important enough to
prevent a bunch of bikers who want to ride from a to b and may stop and
    have a smoko halfway.

I'm not sure about a fast food restaurant... but what about a cigarette
company that knowingly markets cancer causing ciggarettes for some
decades before finally and reluctantly admitting that they kill people?

Substitute "communism" and "vietnam" or "Korea" for "Islamic Caliphate"
and "Paris intifada" and I'd be getting flashbacks to the 1950s if I'd
been born. (I'm desperately trying to avoid invoking Godwin's law
because as mentioned in that blog Big linked to there is also a parallel
to a certain time in European history).

We've heard this all before, it's deja vu. Who was it said the quote
along the lines of "the best way to get people to give up their
liberties is first to create an external threat" ? Macchiavelli ?

Yes by avoiding locations subject to terrorist attack, like Iraq, Israel
and Bali... places which (unlike Australia) have a history of terrorist
    attacks.

Yes. Too limiting. It's not a black and white world you know...
Figure it out from the answers I gave.

As well as Britain, India, Afghanistan, Egypt, Pakistan, the
Phillipines, Bangladesh, Sudan, Algeria, Mauritania, Lebanon, Chechnya
    and Thailand.

And that's just in the last few months. Islamic terrorism? What Islamic
    terrorism?...

That is hardly conclusive, but even if they were the new laws had
nothing to do with these arrests so these arrests can't be used as a
    justification for them!

So why the need for the shoot on kill changes or the 14 day hold laws then?

It is all starting to become clear, John Howard hijacked 4 jet liners on
Sept 11 so he could pass laws to take over Australia.

My point of view clearly had nothing to do with the community disinterest in
what our esteemed Senator had to say, although I certainly enjoyed the
debate he is a member of the Queensland Right and about as Conservative as I
    am.

Really... ever been involved in a disagreement between a small business
and a union? You might be very surprised where the real power lies...
