    Is it a bad idea?

I don't see anything on the tin that suggests it is, other that its
    flammable....

I've used Castrol bike polish for a year or so with no obvious ill effects.
It reduces the refraction (?) from annoying little micro scratches to a
level they're almost unnoticeable. Seems to get water to run off very
    slightly faster too.

Fucking pikeys, the lot of yer.

When my visor needs changing I buy a new lid :)

I use Turtlewax hard shell polish.

It's especially good at keeping your visor clear in the rain.

If you get water on the inside of a visor that has had RainX applied to
the inside the water spreads and everything gets blurred. Much worse
than dealing with a bit of fogging, IME.

Of course, it also really helps if the ignorant **** coming the other
    way isn't on permanent main-beam...

RainX goes on the outside. Antifog goes on the inside.

I've heard from a few people that it can cause the visor to become
brittle. I've used it loads without problem and will continue to do
    so.

I guess this wasn't much help was it!

August Bike mag on page 146 gives helmet tips and specifically warns
against aerosol polishes, they say the propellant can break down the
visor's shatterproof properties. No research quoted though so I wonder
where they got that from - is it an urban myff?

Squirting it onto a cloth first would mean the propellant would evaporate
before contact with the visor, wouldn't it

What sort of time period are we talking about? I used furniture
polish[1] on my last visor daily for 4 years and it exhibited no ill
effects other than normal scratching on the front.
