Mr. Foolwatch claims cheap petrol is here to stay.

  1. Cheap fuel here to stay - watchdog

THERE'S good news for motorists - petrol could drop back under $1 a litre, the
    country's petrol policeman says.

And he says it won't soar back above $1.60 a litre any time soon.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's petrol chief, Joe Dimasi,
said the collapse of the world economy was keeping a lid on petrol prices.

"The price troughed around about Christmas at under $1 a litre,'' Mr Dimasi said
    in Canberra today.

"I'm not necessarily prepared to kiss it goodbye.''

Today, unleaded petrol was selling at around $1.05 in some capital cities, up
from about 90 cents a litre earlier in the month.

Mr Dimasi said the price had crept up because of a rise in international oil
prices, and it would probably creep up a little more over the coming fortnight.

But that's still well down from the country's peak of $1.60, reached during
    economic boom-times last year.

Mr Dimasi said high prices would not return soon.

"I would be absolutely amazed if it gets anywhere near that sort of figure.''

He warned retailers he would be watching to make sure they did not jack up
prices over the Australia Day long weekend.

Mr Dimasi also offered some cautious support for the revival of a FuelWatch
scheme, a website that updates petrol prices daily.

The Federal Government promised to bring in FuelWatch but the Senate killed off
    the scheme.

"If people want to provide more information to consumers, in general we're in
favour of it,'' Mr Dimasi said.

He was "not necessarily'' opposed to the reincarnation of FuelWatch, and was
    "open-minded''.

There had been speculation about the industry bringing in a FuelWatch scheme, Mr
    Dimasi noted.
Turning to the price of diesel, which has outstripped unleaded petrol recently,
Mr Dimasi said this was caused by phenomenal demand from other countries.

Australia's retail margins for diesel appeared to have blown out a little, and
the ACCC would watch to make sure those margins closed again, he said.

Mr Dimasi said high diesel prices were tough for farmers and others in regional
areas and he was watching the situation closely.

The Nationals say the increasing price gap between diesel and unleaded petrol is
a worry, and the ACCC should investigate immediately.

  2. That's all Labour party stooges can do ... watch.
This seems to be a scam somewhere or other, when the price of diesel in
some Asian countries is lower than what they call benzene (petrol).

Maybe Mr. Dimasi can "watch" this as well?

  7. What difference does it make, Mr. Motor Mouth?

Labour are in power, so they make the only effective policy.

But in the case of Labour, no policy is effective!

    LOL.

and the Libs had every opportunity to change that
but didn't so they must have thought it was a good idea too
Of course all that extra money they got from the GST on the excise
helped them keep it that way

  17. Yeah - but in case you hadn't noticed, our dollar had dropped from
near parity to 70c. There's more than one factor in it.

Fool Watch was rejected by the Senate. Did you miss this?

    In NSW similar prices?

  19. Its closer to 65c now. Which makes paying for imported oil in USD more expensive.
