    For use while riding.

Not bothered about perfect sound, more about durability and having enough
    music to avoid boredom.

    Anyone?

Something without moving parts would be more rugged, so mp3 I'd think.

  3. MP3. there's no reason to buy a minidisc.

MP3 no question - minidisc is as good as dead.

Get a PDA - you can use it for mp3's Sat Nav, videos etc etc.

Far too fragile to be carting around all the time, needs charging a lot,
doesn't take standard dry cells you can get at any petrol station.
Dedicated kit tends to do the job better than these multi use things
    imo.

I've had a 4150 Ipaq for 18 months now that I use daily for music for the
run to work. I use it at work, and it's spent two days in my tank bag doing
the GPS navigating around the northern arm of our family. So far it's been
fine. The battery lasts about 4-5 hours, and I have a cigaretter lighter
type lead to keep it charged on the move (GPS also does this as I have
    hard-wired type).

It's my MP3 player, diary, alarm clock, mobile e-mail checker. It's got a
shed load of stuff on it I use at work.

And they're fairly cheap on e-bay.

weeeerrr I use a PDA wired to the bike in a "ram mounted otter box"
for sat nav and an ihp-140 which is hard disk based but survived
jogging and bycicle and most easily motorbike. So the vibration has no
effect on either from jogging and the power is enough or wire it if
more than 4 hours PDA 8 hours mp3.

Not so. My Medion PDA stands up to what I throw at it, it charges from
the bike, and handles GPS, routing with voice directions, MP3, keeps my
diary, has my address book, lets me play games, read Ebooks, see where
the stars are, and do the Telegraph crossword.

I'd suggest solid state mp3 as well, because you'll will drop it.

Ok, ok... I seem to be very hard on hardware. It seems that not everyone
else is. :) Maybe it's just me that's managed to drop a PDA into a
puddle, on concrete both smashing and completely fucking my nice PDA.

So far, my dedicated kit has put up with my abuse very well indeed, no
hinges to snap off, and nice rugged thick display windows with
    waterproof cases.

As for games, well, my PS2 does that very well, and books are best read
    from paper imho.

Not a too cheap crappy one though, the headphone sockets tend to be
fragile on those. I should be a tester, I can really screw up technology
    well. :)

Get Flash ram not HDD MP3 (ie IPOD etc). Flash isn't affected by rough
roads. Get one that uses standard flashlight batteries or similar so you
can buy fresh ones when you refuel easily if the chargeable ones run
out. Would advise getting one that uses digicam flash chips if you have
    a digicam.

IE this is what I use for the job which takes SD ram and uses AA
batteries, size of a matchbox cost 30quid. I use the 1Gb SD chips I have
    for the camera/pda.

I've been using an Ipod on a bike over the last 18 months- I haven't had
any problems and use it for about 6 hours a week.
