Nor will the water ever leave

If water _does_ get in it has be be removed else things get musty.

I'll second the vote in favor of hard luggage. The Givi setup on my
bikes (3 bag set, usable on three different bikes) has worked superbly.

A single large topcase (e52) is the most convenient. Sidecases add
capacity but are a bit awkward to load and unload. The sidecases do
offer a little help in a tipover; they keep the bike slightly upright,
making it _much_ easier to pick up, and protect some tail plastic.

I haven't had a chance to talk to the insurance folks on how they
categorize bikes, but the categorization I had was only from the
manuf. web pages, which I also found surprising.

When I had trouble getting insurance on my hot rod when I was single
and under 25, it was the HP that they kept asking about.

    With bikes, who knows ...

    Enjoy,

If I think some water got in the case, I leave it open overnight in the
    garage. Never been a problem.

thanks, now i'm in a position to look! the dealer did not have
anything useful, except the bike itself. thanks in large part to nick
weaver, i took a closer look at the dl650 vstrom, and now have one in
    my garage.

hopefully someone'll pickup the vlx shadow from craigslist.org. the
only thing i'll miss is the potato-potato engine sound that i've
gotten used to, and the chrome and good looks. the visibility (high
seat, great headlights), the pickup, the handling, the fairing, the
large tank, i can go on and on, are all pluses on the new toy.

    enjoy,
