I have been toying with the idea for over 2 years now (stupid I know)
about ditching the 4 wheels for 2. I know next to nothing about
    bikes\biking.

After a quick google correct me if I'm wrong please. I need to sit a
CBT, then a theory test and then take some kind of motorcycle training
and test ? *gulp* is that lot going to be as expensive as learning to
    drive was ?

I honestly wish looking back I had a bike when I was a bit younger but
just seemed to never get away from cars. Now still being young at a mere
40 which is the new 20 ? ok I'll just keep that between me and my
    therapist.

I've been driving for over 20 years now, so hopefully that may come in
handy probly not. I guess my observations will have to be a bit better!
to look for the dopey motorists who just pull out of where they want
without looking. Speaking as a day to day cyclist to work.

So being new to the game what would I need to purchase in terms of
safety equipment and nescessary stuff ?

I was also wondering how simple a bike is to service at home ? Been
working on cars (hobby mechanic) since I was a kid.

Not wanting to do what most people do which is buy some sporty
yamawotsit and fly off a bend into a cows backside, what would be a good
    bike to get.

My uses are going to be for tarting down the motorway (100 miles) and
biking for fun in nice weather cos am a wuss in rain, plus the wife
might leave me if I get another cold and cry I'm dying again, not my
    finest moment.

so yeah my first post into becoming a hells angels woohooo lol

And whats that clunking sound when a bike pulls off sounding like
something is broken ? gears enagaging ?

I think I read somewhere about the bike test changing is this good or
    bad news for me ?

    Appreciate your advice.

....wonders off making broom broom noises

  2. Helmet, leather jacket, decent gloves, boots, as a minimum. Add
    waterproofs, full leathers, etc later.

Not the same as a car, really. Fluids, filters etc is easy. More
    complicated stuff is, well, complicated.
Bad news if you leave it too late - it'll get a lot harder and more
    expensive.
