    Although never having driven in Poland I have in other similar places
    (The Peoples Democratic Republic of East Sussex for one), so have a very
    good idea what state they were in the late eighties and how 10 years of
    extensive infrastructure investment and renewal would have improved them.

    Poland! Poland! Poland!
    (but with stronger wheel rims)

    Funny you say that. Years ago, a friend of mine was riding around
    Poland on a Bonny and happened to hit a fsck off big pot hole that
    fucked the front wheel rim.

    Ordering parts where next to impossible, with an umpteen month waiting
    time. The garage where my mate took the bike ended up repairing the
    rim, with typical Eastern European knowledge. Got him back on the road
    within a couple of days.

    One thing for the Poles and Communism. Nothing went to waste and
    repair skills were (and probably still are) second to none.

    Crikey, you took your time.

    Anyway, there's too much traffic, too many villages etc on that. The
    amazing thing about the N71 is how little traffic it has.

    and the state of the roads - especially the motorways - beggars
    belief.

    We got off the Motorway because we didn't dare to go faster than about
    25-30mph for fear of losing the rear axle. I mean, you could hear it
    hit the bump stops at that speed. Constantly.

    [1] Didn't find it. Found what's left of the cemetary but appearantly
    the Red Army destroyed most of it.

    There are a few new 'motorways' springing up. Notably one between
    Warsaw and Gdansk. It's pretty good actually. But (since the last time
    I was there, three or four years ago), there weren't too many new
    roads.

    When I was there, most of them were restricted to 90kph on the long
    stretches too. And the Police were real bastards and over-zealous with
    the fines.

    It helped to have two wallets. The main one hidden and the other one
    with only a few zloty (about 100z) max. That way, when I got pulled, I
    did the tourist thing and pleaded ignorance. I also said 'Nei rakunek
    [1]' which means 'No receipt'. That way the fine was divided by two
    automagically.

    Saying that, I loved the place. Best work mission I've ever done in
    Europe. I'd love to go back.
    They did a lot of that. :-(

    [1] Don't fsking ask me to spell that in Polish :)
