Those people that own SLR (digital or otherwise) Cameras...

How do you carry your camera and all the accessories securely and
    dryly?

I thought about converting a magnetic tank bag to a camera bag with
    foam insterts/padding.

I'd to carry most of the stuff listed below. Any comments/solutions
that others have come up with?

    I have a:
    Nikon D80

    With the following lenses:
    Nikkor AF-S DX VR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED

    memory cards, brush/blower, cable relase.

  2. Since you're obviously planning to move yourself and that shedload of
camera equipment away from the bike to get your shots, you're going to
need a backpack anyway, so why not start there?

Lowepro Primus or Lowepro Flipside (www.maxwell.com.au)
    National Geographic Earth Explorer (www.natgeogear.com.au)
or even a Tamrac Velocity in the largest size (Ted's Camera Stores)

I would be worried about the effects of vibration on the camera body
and lens, because a) they are so expensive to buy/repair b) you're
stuffed without it. I have a $60 lowepro camera case (the shop
assistant described it as a "man-bag") and I have a rucksackthat would
ba able to carry that. Even then I'd pad it with other soft stuff
(winter gloves, thermal jacket lining etc) that I normally carry
around if I wasn't wearing them.

For my round-Australia trip[1] I carried an old Practika SLR with a
70-170mm zoom lens and a 50mm lens. They just went in the tank bag,
padded by whatever gear I was carrying (the zoom was usually fitted to
the camera, the 50mm was in a case). Eventually 3 or 4 screws
vibrated out of the camera body, but the magnetic base of the tank bag
    collected them.

I carried a lightweight, flimsy tripod on the gearsack rack, and
    barely used it.

For the trip to view the eclipse at Woomera[2] I carried the same
gear, a better tripod, and a 400mm telephoto lens with doubler.

When I binned my bike at Cabramurra in 2003 the poor old faithful
Practika died (bent the pentaprism housing).

  5. Pfft. It's a backpack. It lives on your back when it isn't in the
cupboard at home. The only way someone is going to steal it is if they
hit you over the head. And if you're carting round $20k of camera gear
in a place where that is likely to happen, you're asking fot it.

Mind you, carting around $20k of camera gear on a motorcycle is asking
for a SMIDSY in the first place. [1]

[1] Noting that the OP listed gear costing more like $2k than $20k.

I use a Lowpro bag, lots of moveable compartments. Cost me $99.

There are smaller and larger ones.

I have a Lowepro camera back pack that I always use. If its wet then just
slip a plastic bag over the top if you really want to but the pack is
    suppose to be waterproof :)

I'm doing well. Been too busy working (finally permanent after years
of doing contracts year by year) and going thru personal shit to post
but I have been lurking. I've dropped in to the IRC chat every now and
    again.

Still riding. Went for a road trip over six days from Adelaide to
Melbourne via the coast and the GOR during the January school
    holidays.
