My base is Kaiserslautern and Ramstein AB. I've been in touch with a
fellow member on a web forum about renting his BMW stored at Stefan
Knopf's place. He doing his due diligence about how we'll arrange it.

As far as a phone goes, I could purchase a cheap used phone here, but
what style? GSM, etc? Off to Google yet again. So many questions, so
    little time.

for that. I just made reservations for four nights starting on
Thursday, June 16th at pension hochödlehen.

Total cost was just $225 US and includes a light breakfast and free
wireless. It looks fantastic and the reviews are tops. Looking at
location on the map, it looks to be situated most excellently for day
    trips into the Alps.

Excellent. Looks to be in a great, if isolated, location.

    Now research the Bavarian Alpenstrasse

Excellent. The photo I posted yesterday was actually of the Obersee,
which is a short walk from the far end of the Konigsee. Definitely
    worth the boat trip down.

In fact, you might want to have a quick read of a couple of holiday
diaries of ours - apologies for the format, which needs updating.

Buy a pre-pay. They're all and only GSM in Europe.

Oh, and I meant buy one in Germany. From the looks of T-Mobile's
website, a basic Nokia will set you back 22Euro with some airtime.

    wessie positioning system [1]

[1] I believe there is a slightly older, less reliable system kicking
about: the CPS. Seen on a previous UKRM outing to the Alps, probably beofre
you were born, when Bruce actually rode a bike, Bear had friends and
Ferrier could construct a sentence with more than 3 words.

Whilst I am unable to confirm or deny the existance of a gagging order, I
suggest you consider divesting assets PDQ.

It's what I do, allbeit my phone is unlocked. You don't get bothered by
incoming, but if you want to make a call you can. Ok, so the number
isn't recognised on most of your mates phones, but in my experience,
transmitted numbers will get answered, and failing that SMS the cunts.

I do that, too - also means you can get all you can eat internet for a a
    handful of euros, too.

It is remarkably cheap isn't it. Not sure about all you can eat, but
1/2 a gig flat out, then throttled after that seems common. Good enough
for the odd email, train/plane times, or even google maps if the going
    gets tough.

I think I paid 20 euros for a gigabyte in Portugal last year.

What amazed me is how bloody good the coverage is out there.

I suppose that's what you get when you spend lots of European money you
    don't have, though.

Ride (or relax on a ferry) down the rhine

can't move for bloody castles perched on every hilltop

look at rothenburg ob der tauber - the chitty chitty bang bang town

don't bother with neuschwanstein and the other Ludwig castles - wall to
wall tourists, you wait for hours to get herded round like sheep

If you want a proper blood and guts castle - square built with moat and
drawbridge, there's a good one 30km east of nuernberg at Rothenburg (not
    ob der tauber)

Don't develop a thirst until you get south of Würzburg, you can't get
good beer in prussia, and you spend more time ordering than drinking
