Do you never go out of the county? I would say that only about one third of
the calls I've made to breakdown services are in my home county.

IME Green Flag has the best coverage in the UK. They use local contractors
only, so it can be pot luck if a decent one turns up. However, for bikes
they will usually send someone along from the "equipped to handle bikes"
list straight away. Green Flag is a bit pricey now.

With the AA & RAC they will make you wait for one of their regular patrols
to attend. They will fiddle and say their computer doesn't cover bikes then
    call for a recovery truck.

Currently my bike is covered by Carole Nash's well regarded breakdown
cover. This is included in the price of my bike insurance.

If I had to buy my own separate cover then I would go for this:
http://www.quotelinedirect.co.uk/breakdown/ which is great value for £59
It's operated by Europ Assistance and they use local agents like Green
Flag. IME, these local agents give a much better service than the patrols
from the nationals. For example, if you need a new tyre then the local guy
is more likely to know who is open on a Saturday afternoon than some AA
patrol drafted in from Bristol for the day.

Many thanks for the info there, Wessie. Seems like good advice. Yes, I
do occasionally ride outside my own county but 99% of my riding is
within Dorset. The Europe Assistance offering at £59 does look good. I
    think I'll settle for that.
