Some people on the UKGSER forum use diesel engine oil in their boxer twins.
The reasons are mostly economic as they have a diesel van so get it paid
for by their employer or through their own business.

There are one or two who claim the extra detergent properties are of
    benefit to the engine.

None unless the engine is prone to getting dirty very quickly.

Diesel engine oil has higher levels of detergents and anti-corrosion
additives (diesel combustion products are corrosive when they get into
the sump) but less actual oil by volume.

Most modern oils are diesel / petrol rated now anyway. I think diesel oils
are designed to be more detergent and to hold stuff in suspension, as they
are used in the carbon soot rich environment of a diesel engine.

It's better mixed 50/50 with stale petrol.

What about the theory that some car oils contain additives that will
    affect wet clutches?

Diesel oils tend to be high detergent (HD), keeps the crap in suspension
rather than settling and clogging fine oilways. Probably.

Comma straight 30 diesel oil is the stuff for aircooled VWs [1] ...

[1] Early ones don't have filters. Just a rudimentry, but fairly
    effective, strainer.

Oh. I've already done that with 25l in the past... which was nice.

But I'm kind of leaning towards burning it in the car atm.

  11. Some folk do dilute it and filter it then bung it in their SOC, but
personally I wouldn't. Otoh, it will burn nicely in your central heating
boiler if filtered down to 5 microns and added at a max concentration of
    10% ShiteOldOil to heating kerosene.

  12. When I buy it in 10gal drums from the Farmer's Store, it's much cheaper.

    That's my argument.

So how would one go about filtering it down to 5microns?

I imagine passing it through a 5 micron filter would be a good starting
    point.

    *sigh*

Where would one obtain such a thing economically and suitable for said
process needing the bare minimum of auxilliary equipment?

  17. You can buy a 5 micron filtering bag, look in YP for 'Filters and
Filtering Systems'; also available is filter cloth you can make up your
own filters from. An old perforated Sky dish is a useful support for
    this.
