Why do you want to know my security arrangerments? I'm hardly likely to
give details out on a public web forum am I?
Garages aren't safe. Especially those with up and over doors which are
usually only secured with a very weak lock. Which is why insurance
companies often refuse to pay out on claims where entry was made
through such a garage door and then through an internal door into the
property. This is apparently one of the most common ways to effect a
breakin after the old trick of shinning up a drainpipe and through an
open window. Moral of the story is to lock any internal door to the
garage. Too many people fit secure replacement windows and doors and
    forget about the garage.

    following:
    Give Carole Nash a try.
Build a shed or buy one of the many bike-shed type thingies that are
made of metal and built for bikes.

    This isn't a web forum, numb-nuts.
    Safer than a garden.
Might be difficult with plastic drain pipes.

His place could be similar to my old place, in that there was a wall
all the way around it, approx 6 foot tall at the lowest point (it was
on a hill). There was a locked gate at the back, so you could phrase
that as a locked garden, if you were a little odd.
Mine was visible from other houses, or if someone wanted to jump a
little to take a look, but it wasn't obvious to some one walking past.
Except when I forgot to close the gates. On more than one occasion I
got up in the morning to find the back gate open and the keys in the
back door, I can be forgetful sometimes.
I can sort of see what he's saying (although I don't fully agree), the
garden provides the advantages of the garage (protected from being
easily seen, easily carted away) but also means that people in adjacent
houses can see if there is someone fiddling with the bike. Having said
that, I didn't pay much attention to my neighbours and I doubt I'd have
noticed something untoward, so I'm not sure that this is particularly
    significant.

Move next door to me. I've got unsecured bikes all over the place, and the
discerning bike thief is much more likely to waste his talents on one of my
old shitheaps than your precious D'oh-ville.

Not everyone else. CN have never come up with the goods for me, so I'm
back with Motorcycle Direct for a 6th year. Just over £400[1] for FC
on my 955i, with breakdown, euro travel, legal and CIHAGM cover, and
    the excess is down too.

[1] Either I'm getting old or I need to buy a riskier motorcycle.

You could do that, but as insurers share details, and aren't keen on
paying out where possible, they might find out you don't have a garage
    when the assessor comes round.

Well I have tried Carole Nash and am now the proud owner of an
insurance certificate. Very efficient, so I can recommend them to
    anyone on present evidence.

Exactly. I wonder if people with base model Vauxhall Astras have the
    same problem getting insurance?
