I've just ridden the new Honda Deauville. Very nice and just what I
need to get to work and go away for weekend jaunts. I ring my insurer,
NIG, who refuse to insure it. I ring Honda, who refuse to insure it.
The problem seems to be I don't have a garage and the bike is worth too
    much.

    Consider this

    I am 43 years old
I have a clean licence held for 22 years and six years no claims bonus
The bikes are kept in a garden behind a locked gate. Next door there is
a year old Hyabusa on the driveway. Round the corner there's a Harley
    on the driveway.
The bike will have the Honda HISS ignition system
The bike will have an alarm. Admittedly only a Solalarm, but an alarm
    none the less.
    The bike will have Smartwater

We're not exactly going to buy a house with a garage, we can't afford
it. The only reason we can afford the current house is that we bought
    it eleven years ago.

Can anyone adivse anywhere I can go to get insurance? Or am I destined
to ride cheap bikes I don't really want to ride?

I don't particularly want to wait a year and buy a used Deauville. I
want one now. I consider it my right to be allowed to buy a motorcycle
and have it insured by an insurer.

My insurance come up for renewal in 23 days anyway. I'm seriously
concerned NIG are going to refuse cover on two year old CBF600 worth
    £3200.

    Can anyone advise?
(Please don't start flaming or insulting me, like the tosser who called
me a wanker when I posted last week. This could be you next week).

You should be proud - not everyone gets called a wanker with their
first post. Keep trying, & if you're /really/ lucky, you might even get
    a "****" before the day's out.

I have a GSX600F (up for sale if any one interested!) on a T plate so not
worth all that much, but emailed http://www.aquote.co.uk/ and got a very
reasonable quote , don't have a garage but bike stored off road. Spoke to
them on the phone 0800 0923935 and they seemed to be on the ball.
If I replace the bike I may give them a try, (after the broker who covers
    the cars)

But you are if you claim that a stationary object is at fault for your
running into it. The answer to dazzle from low sun is a helmet with a peak,
no matter how nerdy it looks.

Have you got room for a metal shed for £240 from Argos?
You didn't say whether you have access to the back yard as it may be against
the rules to put it at the front, but it should satisfy the insurance company.

Just goto 2 another insurer & tell them u've a garage most policies don't
cover u for theft within 500 yards of u'r home address anyway & the chances
of them checking if you have a garage are near impossible or even better
insure it through a friends address with a garage.

I would read your policy again. They won't cover you for theft if the
vehicle is parked on your property but not IN the garage.

If it's stolen from in the garage they will pay. They won't pay if you
    leave it on the driveway.

And I can see lying to them about having a garage has just a tiny flaw
    - likely to become apparent when you report a theft and the Ins. Co
    inspector comes round.

Suggesting people lie to insurance companies is not the brightest of
    ideas.

The chances of that working ar about as high as you posting in a
decent manner and using English rather than poorly-executed txtspk.

You surely are one ignorant meercat.

    What a load of bollocks.

You don't get covered within 500 yards if it's left out in the open and you
    have claimed it was garaged.

If you claim for a loss and they find you don't have a garage, not only do
you not get your money, but you leave yourself open to prosecution and being
unable to get insurance in future.

I saw some meercats at the Cotswold Wildlife Park yesterday. None of
them struck me as being particularly intelligent. They were however
well up the scale compared to the baby gibbon, who seemed to think his
mum enjoyed having her head jumped on. Funny as **** to watch, mind.

    You poor fucker.
Rent a garage in your area? Not ideal, but it might get you insured.
Deal with it. Or don't. Your call.

My broker told me (at the time of getting my insurance) that most
underwriters will only insure my ungaraged bike (Ninja Six B1) in my area if
its worth £3400 or less. So I just told them that in my opinion my bike was
only worth that much. They also said that if I made a claim, the value I get
is not based on what I calim the bike to be worth but what the insurer
values it at. Whther that is actually true or not, I'm not sure.

You do run the risk of being being underinsured but for me it was the only
way I could get insured. Luckily my bike is only worth that now anyway :)

Thanks for the replies. No, I'm not sticking a peak on a Shoei
Syncrotec 2. There's nowhere to fix it to and if you use sellotape and
die in an accident your life insurers could refuse to pay out. That
actually happened a few years ago.
Thanks for the info on the insurers. I've also had people shouting
Carol Nash at me all morning, so I gave in and rang them. I'm now
insured for roughly the same price it would have cost me when the
insurance was up for renewal next month. The bike is kept on "private
land", in other words a secure garden, or as secure as most garages,
with the advantage if someone does try and nick it, they could well be
seen by people in nearby houses. If you can get in a garage you can
close the door behind you and work on the lock/alarm unseen. Pity
    insurers don't realise that.

Can you explain how you've locked your garden?

And made it so your motorcycle isn't visible?

I know I'm thick, but how can you claim a garden is more secure than a
    garage?!
