Motorcycle engines: New coating?

Lately I noticed how some of the newer motorcycle engines are treated
with a special surface coating. I cannot figure out whether it's a
paint or some sort of anodization. Maybe plasma or some other kind of
electrochemical process. Anyhow the surface is NOT smooth, and usually
    it is grey or black.

Here you can see some pictures of what I mean:

Can anyone tell me what was done to those engines? What product/process
    was used?

It's just powder coating. Piss easy to put on (with the right equipment and
an oven to bake it) but a bitch to get off.
