    Hello

Just how hard is it to get? I have purchased the Victorian Rider Handbook
and the questions appear to be fairly easy. I have a full car licence and
apparently I do not have to sit the Car Learning Permit Knowledge Test.

Are there any accredited mototcycle training and assessment service
providers that are particuly good in the Melbourne metro area?

    Thank you

Vic Roads had a great training scheme at their Kilsyth driver/rider training
facility years ago. I hope they still have it because what my friend
described of his recent training (provided by an Vic Roads approved private
training centre) sounded absolutely dismal by comparison.

L plates (at least when I did it) consisted of an written test and a basic
off road ridden test (basic cornering and braking etc). It's probably
    different now.

Can't comment on the others but I went to DECCA in Carrum and thought
they were very good. It was fairly easy and they scored me well, so I
went back to the same people for the second part. I had never even
ridden a motorcycle before I walked in there and now I ride every day
because I've discovered I enjoy riding.

Good for you, wish there were more like you who prefer a bike to a car,

Not only for the pleasure of riding, but less traffic congestion and parking
    worries
Aside from what anyone north of the Murray claims
Melbourne has less wet days and much less rain than Sydney and or Brisbane
Although it is colder being the down side.

  5. Sorry Nev, after not having to disagree with you for a record time of about
three weeks, I have now got to disagree with you here,
Sydney gets an average rainfall of 1212.8mm per year or in old terms, 47.7
    inches
Melbourne on the other hand, gets an annual rainfall of 646.9mm, or 25.5
    inches

  7. I was talking about the amount of water that fell out of the sky
Okay, so Melbourne has an average of 10 days a year more that Sydney where
    it rains
but as I said, Sydney has twice as much rain as Melbourne
have been in both and I would rather be in Melbourne rain, that in Sydney
    rain

After 4.5 years riding a VTR250 (which was great for commuting and I
never really had a reason to change it) I decided it was getting long
in the tooth: I had put 80,000km on the clock during this time.

So I am currently running in a new CB400, which is also great. I think
I'm glad I started off the way I did. If you're not sure whether the
motorcycle is right for you (as RFC might), you can pick up low
mileage second-hand bikes quite cheaply. I never dropped mine or had
an accident in that time, but the risk of that happening was the main
reason I bought second-hand for my first bike (less than a week after
passing part 1 if my memory serves me correctly). The CB400 is
currently in the workshop having the Staintune and carry rack fitted
and I am riding the most amazingly shit loan bike while the work is
    being carried out. ;-)
I'll be able to give a better review after it's run in but so far
(80kms with no Staintune) riding it feels like wiping your arse with
silk and it's perceptibly heavier and more powerful. It seems to get
into top gear at quite low speed (60kph?) but from that point the VVC
handles the power delivery automatically and all you do is twist the
grip and aim for the gap. Interestingly, if I apply the back brake it
puts on a bit of front brake, but not sure if it's the same thing as
pre-loading (I doubt it somehow). More soon.

Or are you arguing with me that Sydney doesn't have twice the amount of rain
    than Melbourne
No matter in how many days ?

RFC, after your part 1 test but before buying a bike, find out how
much to insure befor you buy it. I'm with AAMI and they let me have
fully comp cover on a VTR250 for $600 (value $4000).

Now that I have a bike worth 3 times that amount, they want $1605 a
year! Where did that number come from? I didn't ask whether they are
taking into account the years of no crashes (almost certainly not).
Seems excessive to me, so I am going to shop around QBE vs. the
    dealers choice.

Have you or anyone tried Shannons?

Shanons have a list of pre-requirements for insuring you including:
    - Your bike is not your main form of transport
and you don't use it on a daily basis.
then underneath it say phone us anyway - we may be able to help... so
    I phoned. They will only insure 1, 2, 3 times-a-month type riders.
BUT they have a sister company called http://www.insuremyride.com/
which is an entirely on-line operation. I don't know what they're
    like.

"Market bloody rates". If I have to replace my bike, then it's going
to cost a heck of a lot more than red-book values. Does anyone offer
reasonable "agreed value" rates? And do insurance companies still
screw you over with agreed value rates?

They only insure bikes less than 10yo old so only one of mine is
    eligible...

However the price was reasonable, and when I got rear-ended by a 4WD
at the lights they were quick and easy payers, and my mechanic says
they are good to deal with and don't mess people around.

When I insured they insured my new bike at what I asked them to do it
for, they have been depreciating it year by year as you would expect
but they have confirmed in writing that the value on the yearly
renewal is the value they'll pay. And it's not redbook.

You tell them what it's worth, and if they agree then that's what
they'll pay out. You can get that in writing.

AAMI pegged my no claims bonus at 'Level 5' (most insurers work with
levels 1-4, but AAMI level 5 is not the same as NIL no claims bonus,
apparently). The reason given was it's because I am a motorcycle
rider. Is this an example of anti-motorcycle discrimination the
others keep on about? Last year they changed their system so
motorcycles were processed the same as cars, so this year I moved up a
level. Practically for me this means that, despite being insured by
them for four years and never making a claim, I am at insurance rating
    4.

The lesson to be learned I suppose is to go with a specialist
motorcycle insurer who understand the issues - mainstream insurers
appear to treat motorcycles as specialist vehicles and I've heard they
can be difficult to get on with if there's a problem. I'm going to
phone QBE on Monday morning and compare them with insuremyride.
They'll both be shit -- thanks to AAMI.

The questions from insuremyride were "what is your no-claims bonus?"
and "who is your insurer?" I phoned AAMI and asked what it was. I
smelt a rat when I couldn't find it printed on any letter, or cover
note I've filed from them over the years.

I didn't have one, not having had comp insurance for years.

They assessed it on age and stated driving record, and gave me a
discount for having done the Stay Upright Advanced course.
