  1. Whoa Pard... you're in for a seat of the pants surprise the day you
    compare my 360 degree crank V4 RC45 with Honda's 180 crank V4 VFR...

You know Pard I recently traded rides with Dave F... the winner of the
H40 race... I got on his GSXR 1000 and he did the same to Mr.RC45...
honestly I thought the low to mid power felt weak but the top rush got
me giggling in my helmet... Dave thought Mr.RC45s power was everywhere...
Pard a bit of history is in order...

Honda's 60s GP past was no key to it's MotoGP future... granted back
then they found power in lots of small cylinders turning unheard of
revs... but as revs rose... internal friction took even more of the
power generated... much of the loss came from vibration leading to parts
misalignment... a new engine architecture was sought... one naturally
    balanced against vibration forces...

Enter the V4... narrow and compact... it also sports perfect primary
balance... a great improvement over the buzzy second order vibration on
inline 4s... the cube like crankcase of a V4 was indeed found to be
inherently more rigid than the longer beam like case of an inline 4...
this translated to reduce friction loss at higher rpms-just what's
    needed in MotoGP...

  2. So then why did they add an extra cylinder for their current effort
    genius?

So what Nicky is saying with all that babbling is that a V5 is
superior to the legendary V4.... interesting!

  4. There are weight limits for each configuration:

Twins and tripples have one minimum weight
fours and fives have to be ~10kg heavier IIRC
sixes and beyond have to be ~20kg heavier...

Thus a 5 gives you one more cylander without a weight penalty. This
is also why Apririla went with a tripple (but couldn't get the weight
down enough to take advantage of it), and why the next Honda has a
nontrivial chance of being a tripple (Honda COULD get the weight
    down).

  5. For the particular racing class of motoGP, yeah.

Also, the Honda V5 has primary balance and is shorter than the 90
    degree ducati V4.

Although, as I said, I suspect that the next honda may be a V3.

And Rossi is looking good. Go Go Gadget I4!

  6. Gaming the rules. The computer models and tests showed
that the V-5 will produce 10-20 more HP than the V-4,
is about as narrow, and is not subject to the weight
    penalty of the 6 cyl.

  8. Just watch Rossi tongue the side of Yamadog's fairing in order to get
the first licks in before it highsides his ass right into the kitty
    liter...

I'm in SF. La cumbre or Balazo do good burritos.

  17. Sounds like a party!

Back to the Moto GP thing -- which print mags and which
online sites do you guys and gals recommend for moto
sports events? The "official" MotoGP site doesn't seem
to have decent race reporting and has a lot of pay content.
The official FIM site is lame.

Superbike and supersport reporting and track details, etc.
would be nice, too. Suggestions welcome.

Quite a race, wasn't it? Thank goodness the directv got hooked up on
    Saturday.

The 2 hours of SBK afterwards seemed dull in comparison.
