The eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park is about 9 miles away. The Skirrid Mountain at this point is quite popular with hikers. I live inbetween this mountain & Abergavenny town. If you want a challenge, try walking up the Skirrid, Blorenge & Sugar Loaf in the same day.
heh. That'd be too much for us!
Brecon town itself is just over 32 miles. The road is very good, with part of it being a very scenic bit of the A40 through the Usk Valley. 35-45 minutes away, depending on traffic in Abergavenny. There's another very scenic route via the Black Mountains, Llanthony Priory, Capel-y-ffin & Hay on Wye. That's 44 miles and can take quite a while as it is single track in places. I only go across it on the bike. The views at the Hay Bluff end are fabulous.
Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can persuade the Powers That Be that we can do some more exploring. Our current plan, which is liable to change to be honest, is to walk Pen Y Fan and spend some time over Usk Reservoir way, both places that we spent a little time around last year and would like to return.
