You're just jealous because the F12 doesn't come with a five cylinder Hammo.

From the same website "There have been other five-cylinder engines
before, notably from Audi, and vibration is always a concern with an odd
    number of cylinders"

And the reason they went for a 5 ?

"The choice of a five-cylinder is an interesting solution to a problem
most competitors solve by offering both four- and six-cylinder engines
in their lines. VW knew the base Jetta would be too slow with a
four-cylinder engine, but too expensive with a V6."

    Ans. Dollars.
    http://www.forbes.com/2004/04/04/cz_sk_0405test.html
"Unlike the I-6, both the I-5 and I-4 have twin balance shafts to cancel
    out engine vibration."

Like I said, put a balance shaft in it and you can smooth it out. Why on
No, smoothness without requiring HP robbing balance shafts

Snipping the bit where I said "but I take no notice of diesels 'cos I
    aint interested.
Snip list of 5 cylinder diesels - fair enough, there's Volvo and
    Daimler-Chrysler making 'em, probably others.
OK, it's not dead, but in petrol form not available outside the US.
<shrug> All engineering solutions require compromise, for a couple of US
models it was the right compromise, it's still an uncommonly used
solution because it's rarely the optimal one, compare to billions of
inline 4s (which while imperfect are a good compromise) and V6's which
make up the vast majority of engines shipped.

From a pure balance point of view, the best engines you can put in a
medium to large car are an inline 6 or a 60 degree V12. There are
however a shed load of other considerations and hence the small physical
size of the I4 and V6 make them ideal for a big slug of road cars.
Naah there'll be a V5 long before an I5 - you could sell a bucket load
of 1000cc Fireblades with V5s and #46s painted on them (oops, can't do
that now, oh well, I'm sure a Gibernau or Biaggi replica will sell just
    as well, NOT :)

Not in road cars that I'm aware of, but the sprinter vans/light
trucks/midi buses are available with 5 cylinder inline diesels in
    certain models.

They actually feel _smoother_ than the 4 cylinder diesels in the same
    vans/trucks/midi buses.

Possibly because the 4 cylinder has to get by without a balance shaft
and the 5 cylinder model has one...

You should be John... they are probably the only real mass market medium
term solution to increasing petrol prices.

High revving, turbo charged 4 cylinder diesel car motors can maintain
petrol performance levals... get close to petrol NVH levels and beat
petrol fuel economy by easily 30% and at times up to 50%.

Mmm, and they can be run on bio diesel generated by sunflowers etc,
yeah, but I still don't like them for the same utterly irrational
reasons people hate two strokes I guess.

You're exaggerating slightly to say they attain petrol performance -
adequate, yes, comparable no, cc for cc, that's why they need to be
turbo'd, and yes we've had the discussion on Petrol vs Diesel about ummm
12months ago when someone wanted to compare a twin turbo 8 litre v10 VW
    tourag diesel to a 5.7L Chev/Holden.

A turbo diesel can perform quite adequately, but for a replacement for
petrol engines I'd rather a hydrogen fuel cell to electric motor engine
thanks :) Electric motors - max torque at 0 RPM, gotta love that for
    getting off the line !

The Prius and that Honda are on the market now already as one partial
solution to petrol prices, and the fuel cell prototypes aren't that far
away from production, problem will be the distribution of fuel.

I would imagine the interim solution would be an electric / diesel
hybrid a la the Prius but with a small capacity turbo diesel instead of
the petrol motor. The one thing they should do with the Prius is put a
domestic AC socket so you can charge it off mains - once Carr starts
building us nuclear power plants we can use non greenhouse power to
    recharge it as well.

Which other Italian brand - Gilera, Cagiva, MV Agusta ?

The one who won 139 open GPs, the one who won 35, the one who won 3, or
would that be the poseurs who've only ever managed to bring home the
    bacon once ?
